Gonorrhoea and chlamydia test (PCR)

A PCR test finds gonorrhoea and chlamydia on a urine sample or a swab you take yourself, and it is the test WHO recommends for both. It is reliable from about two weeks after the risk. Rapid tests and blood antibody tests miss current infections or pick up old ones.

What a result means

Negative: no infection found. If the risk was under two weeks ago, test again from day fourteen.

Positive: both are cured with the right antibiotics, gonorrhoea usually with one injection. A Mezo doctor prescribes treatment, and partners from the last two months should be tested and treated too.

Questions people ask

Why PCR and not a rapid test?

PCR is the most accurate test for both infections. Rapid tests miss some infections, and a chlamydia blood test only shows a past infection.

Do I need a swab?

Men give a urine sample. Women can use a swab they take themselves, which is as reliable.

Why test without symptoms?

Most chlamydia and much gonorrhoea cause no symptoms but can still damage fertility. Testing is the only way to know.
