About three quarters of the stomach is removed by keyhole surgery, leaving a narrow tube, the sleeve. You feel full on much less food, and the hormone that drives hunger falls. It is the most common weight loss operation in the world. Most people stay one or two nights.

How the price is set

Written quote after consultation

Weight assessment with a consultant: ₦35,000

Your price is a written all-in quote after the assessment, because your weight, your health and the tests you need change it. It does not move without your written agreement.

What your written quote covers

  • The surgeon, the assistant and the anaesthetist
  • Theatre time and the stapling and keyhole equipment
  • Your bed and nursing care for the planned stay
  • Medication while you are admitted
  • Reviews with the surgeon and a dietitian in the first year

Not in the quote

  • The first consultation
  • Tests and specialist reviews before surgery, quoted with the operation once the surgeon knows what you need
  • Vitamins and supplements after surgery, which are for life
  • Care for a complication needing intensive care or a return to theatre

What decides your quote

  • A higher BMI, sleep apnoea or heart disease, which change the anaesthetic plan and the stay
  • A hiatus hernia found and repaired during the operation
  • Previous operations on the stomach or abdomen
  • A longer stay than planned

Most HMO plans in Nigeria do not cover weight loss surgery, balloons or weight loss medicines. Bring your HMO number to the consultation and the desk will ask. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price in writing before anything is booked.

Is it right for you

Who this is for

A good fit

  • A BMI of 40 or more, or 35 or more with diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea or painful joints
  • For people of Black African family background, lower thresholds apply, because weight-related illness starts at a lower BMI
  • Someone who has tried diet, exercise and medicines properly and not kept the weight off
  • Someone ready to change how they eat for life and to keep their follow-up appointments

When it is not the right answer

  • Severe acid reflux, where a gastric bypass is usually the better operation
  • Anyone not yet fit for a general anaesthetic, until that is treated
  • Uncontrolled eating disorders, alcohol or drug dependence
  • Pregnancy, or planning a pregnancy in the next year to eighteen months

What happens

The pathway, step by step

  1. 1

    Weight assessment with the surgeon₦35,000

Your weight history, what you have tried, your medicines and your health. You leave knowing whether surgery is right for you and which operation.

  2. 2

    Tests and reviews

Bloods, a scan, and an anaesthetic review. Many people also have a camera test of the stomach, a sleep study, a heart check and a dietitian review.

  3. 3

    A written all-in price

The operation, the stay and the first year of reviews in one figure, in writing, before a date is set.

  4. 4

    The pre-operative diet

Usually two weeks of a low-calorie diet before surgery to shrink the liver, which makes keyhole surgery safer.

  5. 5

    The operation

About one to two hours by keyhole surgery under general anaesthetic.

  6. 6

One or two nights in hospital

Walking the same day, sipping fluids the next.

  7. 7

    Reviews through the first year₦25,000

With the surgeon and a dietitian, checking weight, bloods and vitamins.

Afterwards

Recovery, realistically

Weeks 1 to 2

Liquids only. Sore wounds, settling with simple painkillers. Desk work from about two weeks.

Weeks 3 to 6

Soft and pureed food, then normal textures in small portions.

Months 1 to 18

Most of the weight comes off in this time. Exercise and protein protect muscle.

For life

Daily vitamins and a yearly blood check.

Risks you should be told about

  • A leak from the staple line, uncommon but serious, needing further treatment
  • Bleeding
  • Acid reflux, new or worse
  • Blood clots in the legs or lungs
  • Vitamin and iron deficiency without lifelong supplements
  • Weight regain if eating habits slip

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

How much does a gastric sleeve cost in Nigeria?

In 2025, Nigerian bariatric centres charged roughly ₦5 million to ₦12 million for a sleeve, depending on the centre and what was included. On Mezo you get one written all-in price after your assessment, with the stay and the first year of reviews in it, before you pay anything.

How much weight will I lose?

Most people lose a large part of their excess weight over the first year to eighteen months. How much depends on your starting weight and on the changes you keep up afterwards. Your surgeon will give you a realistic figure for you.

Is the sleeve reversible?

No. The removed part of the stomach is gone. That is why the assessment takes time and why you meet the surgeon before anything is booked.

Sleeve or bypass?

The sleeve is simpler and keeps the bowel as it is. A bypass usually helps reflux and type 2 diabetes more. The surgeon will advise which suits you.

Do I need to travel abroad for this?

No. Keyhole weight loss surgery is done in Lagos by surgeons trained abroad, and your follow-up is near home, which matters for the year after.
