Bowel Cancer Surgery at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a ₦35,000 consultation, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers theatre time and the stapling and keyhole equipment, your bed and nursing care for the planned stay, and medication while you are admitted. Prices last checked 28 October 2026.

The part of the bowel holding the cancer is removed with the nearby lymph glands, and the two ends are joined. For the colon this is a colectomy; for the rectum, an anterior resection. Some people need a stoma, a bag on the tummy, for a while or for good. Surgery is the main treatment for bowel cancer that has not spread far.

How the price is set

Written quote after consultation

Consultant surgical opinion: ₦35,000

Your price is a written quote after the surgeon has seen your colonoscopy, biopsy and scans, because the operation and the stay change it. It does not move without your written agreement.

What your written quote covers

  • The surgeon, the assistant and the anaesthetist
  • Theatre time and the stapling and keyhole equipment
  • Your bed and nursing care for the planned stay
  • Medication while you are admitted
  • Analysis of the bowel removed
  • Stoma nurse support, where a stoma is made

Not in the quote

  • The first consultation
  • Colonoscopy, biopsy and staging scans
  • Chemotherapy or radiotherapy
  • Stoma bags after discharge
  • Unplanned intensive care or a return to theatre

What decides your quote

  • Colon or rectum, and how much bowel is removed
  • Keyhole or open surgery
  • A stoma, and a later operation to close it
  • A longer stay than planned

If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.

Is it right for you

Who this is for

A good fit

  • Bowel cancer confirmed by colonoscopy and biopsy, where scans show it can be removed
  • A large polyp that cannot be removed safely at colonoscopy
  • A bowel blocked or bleeding because of a tumour

When it is not the right answer

  • Small polyps, which are removed at colonoscopy without an operation
  • Some rectal cancers, which are treated with radiotherapy first
  • Anyone not yet fit for a major operation, until that is improved

Afterwards

Recovery, realistically

First week

Tiredness is common. No heavy lifting. Bowel habit may be different for a while.

After six weeks

Most people are back to normal activity, unless chemotherapy follows.

Risks you should be told about

  • A leak where the bowel is joined, the most serious risk, sometimes needing a stoma
  • Bleeding
  • Wound and chest infection
  • Changed bowel habit, especially after rectal surgery
  • Blood clots in the legs or lungs

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

Will I need a bag?

Many people do not. A stoma is more likely after rectal surgery, and is often temporary, closed with a smaller operation a few months later. The surgeon will tell you before the operation.

Can bowel cancer be cured?

Often, when it is found early and removed completely. That is why bleeding from the back passage or a change in bowel habit should never be put down to piles without a check.

Why is there no fixed price on this page?

Because the operation, whether a stoma is made and how long you stay all change it. You get the price in writing before admission.
