A pilonidal sinus is a small tunnel in the skin at the top of the buttock crease, usually filled with hair, that gets infected again and again. Surgery removes the tunnel and closes or reshapes the skin so it is less likely to come back. Most people go home the same day.
Also called: Pilonidal cyst removal, Pilonidal abscess, Excision of pilonidal sinus, Cleft lift

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
Consultant surgical opinion: ₦35,000
Your price is a written quote after the surgeon has examined you, because the size of the sinus and the method chosen change it. It does not move without your written agreement.
What your written quote covers
- The surgeon and the anaesthetist
- Theatre time
- Your recovery bed for the day
- Wound checks with the surgeon after the operation
Not in the quote
- The first consultation
- Draining an abscess first, if one is present
- Daily dressings at home, where the wound is left open
What decides your quote
- A larger or branching sinus
- A flap or cleft lift operation rather than a simple excision
- An overnight stay
If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.
Is it right for you
Who this is for
A good fit
- A lump at the top of the buttock crease that keeps getting infected or leaking
- Small openings, like pits, in the crease with pain or discharge
- A pilonidal abscess that has been drained and has come back
When it is not the right answer
- A hot, swollen abscess today, which is drained first and operated on once it settles
- Pits that have never caused trouble, which can be left alone
What happens
The pathway, step by step

- 2
A written price
For the method chosen, before a date is set.
- 3
The operation
Usually under general anaesthetic, thirty to sixty minutes.

Wound check with the surgeon.
Afterwards
Recovery, realistically
Week 1
Sore when sitting. Avoid long periods sitting directly on the wound.
Weeks 2 to 6
Desk work after a week or two with a closed wound, longer with an open one.
Afterwards
Keeping the area clean and free of hair lowers the chance of it coming back.
Risks you should be told about
- Wound infection
- The wound opening up or healing slowly
- The sinus coming back
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Will antibiotics cure it?
Antibiotics calm an infection for a while, but the tunnel stays, so it usually comes back. Surgery removes it.
Is it the same as piles or a fistula?
No. A pilonidal sinus is in the buttock crease, away from the anus. Piles and fistulas are at the anus.
Will it come back after surgery?
Sometimes. The surgeon chooses the method with the lowest chance of return for your sinus, and keeping the area free of hair helps.
