Is it right for you

Who this is for

A good fit

  • More than one swollen joint, or swollen finger, wrist or toe joints, with stiffness in the morning
  • Joint pain that has lasted more than a few weeks with no injury, or keeps coming back
  • Back pain that started before 45, wakes you at night and eases when you move
  • Gout attacks more than once a year, or gout with kidney stones
  • Joint pain with a rash, mouth ulcers, hair loss or fevers, or a positive ANA test
  • Psoriasis with painful, swollen joints or a swollen finger or toe
  • A bone that broke in a minor fall, or a bone density result you want explained
  • Anyone on arthritis or lupus treatment that is not working

When it is not the right answer

  • A single hot, red, swollen joint with a fever: this can be a joint infection and needs a hospital today
  • A joint that was injured, locks or gives way: start with an orthopaedic surgeon
  • Numbness around the back passage, loss of bladder or bowel control, or weakness in both legs: go to an emergency department now
  • A child with a swollen joint: see a paediatric rheumatologist

What happens

The pathway, step by step

  1. 1

    Ask for the visit

Tell us what is swelling or hurting and for how long. A coordinator books the earliest suitable time with a rheumatologist, in Lagos or by video where one offers it, and shows you the fee before you pay.

  2. 2

    The first consultation₦100,000

Your history, every joint examined, and your old results read. You leave with the likely diagnosis and the tests that will confirm it.

  3. 3

    Tests, where they help

Blood tests at a partner laboratory, or collected at home in Lagos, and X-rays where needed, each priced before you pay.

  4. 4

    Treatment and review

Treatment starts once the diagnosis is clear. Inflammatory arthritis and lupus need regular reviews and blood test monitoring, booked by the rheumatologist at the fee shown when you book.

Afterwards

What happens afterwards

After the first visit

A written plan, the tests to do, and the signs that mean you should be seen sooner.

Over the following months

For rheumatoid arthritis, NICE advises regular checks in specialist care until the disease is controlled, then a review at least once a year. Your GP can share the routine care in between.

Risks and limits you should know

  • A consultation carries no physical risk. Any test, injection or medicine advised is explained, with its own risks, before you agree to it.

Every treatment has limits and side effects. Yours are explained before you start, and you can always say no.

Questions people ask

How much does a rheumatologist consultation cost in Nigeria?

On Mezo, a first consultation is from ₦100,000. Each rheumatologist sets their own fee, and it is shown before you pay. Tests and medicines are separate and priced before you pay for them.

Do I need a referral to see a rheumatologist?

No. You can book directly. If another doctor has written to you or done tests, bring the letter, the results and any X-rays.

What should I bring?

A list of every medicine and herbal remedy you take, previous blood test results, X-ray or scan reports, and a note of which joints swell, when, and how long the stiffness lasts in the morning.

Rheumatologist or orthopaedic surgeon: which do I need?

A rheumatologist treats arthritis and autoimmune conditions with medicines and monitoring. An orthopaedic surgeon treats injuries and joints damaged enough to need an operation. Swelling in several joints, stiff mornings, or joint pain with a rash or fever starts with a rheumatologist.
