The short answer
The arthritis blood tests Mezo sells today are anti-CCP for rheumatoid arthritis (₦48,000), ESR for inflammation (₦8,000) and uric acid for gout (₦12,000): ₦68,000 for the three, paid online and done at a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site. No single blood test proves or rules out arthritis. Rheumatoid factor, ANA, CRP and HLA-B27 are arranged through a rheumatologist, who chooses the tests from your symptoms.

The tests you can book on Mezo
Each is priced from the laboratory partner's list and paid online, then done at a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site. In Lagos, the sample can be taken at home. Booking the three together costs ₦68,000.
- Anti-CCP, ₦48,000: an antibody found in many people with rheumatoid arthritis, more specific than rheumatoid factor. NICE suggests it when rheumatoid factor is negative and rheumatoid arthritis is still suspected.
- ESR, ₦8,000: a general marker of inflammation. Raised in inflammatory arthritis, but also in infection, anaemia, pregnancy and older age, so it is never a diagnosis on its own.
- Uric acid, ₦12,000: the substance that forms crystals in gout. NICE uses a level of 360 micromol/litre or more to support the diagnosis, and as the treatment target to get below. It can read normal during an attack, so it may need repeating two weeks after it settles.
Tests a rheumatologist arranges
These are not on Mezo's laboratory list yet. They are not booked directly here: the rheumatologist decides whether you need them, and arranges them.
- Rheumatoid factor: the first antibody test NICE advises for suspected rheumatoid arthritis. It is also positive in some healthy people and in other conditions.
- ANA (antinuclear antibody), and ENA if the ANA is positive: almost everyone with lupus has a positive ANA, so a negative result makes lupus unlikely. Many people without lupus are positive too.
- CRP: a faster-moving inflammation marker than ESR, used to follow how active rheumatoid arthritis is.
- HLA-B27: a gene test that supports a diagnosis of ankylosing spondylitis. NICE advises it only when three of the inflammatory back pain features are present.
- Bone density (DEXA) scan: not a blood test, but the test for osteoporosis. The rheumatologist tells you where to have one and reads the T score with you.
Why one test is never the answer
Arthritis is diagnosed by a doctor examining your joints, with blood tests and X-rays to support it. People with rheumatoid arthritis can have normal blood tests, and NICE advises urgent referral for swollen joints even when they are normal. Healthy people can have a positive rheumatoid factor or ANA. Testing everything at once without a reason produces worrying results that mean nothing.
A single hot, red, swollen joint with a fever, or with feeling sick and shivery, can be an infection inside the joint. It needs a hospital today, not a booking.

Common questions
How much is an arthritis blood test in Nigeria?
On Mezo, anti-CCP is ₦48,000, ESR ₦8,000 and uric acid ₦12,000, or ₦68,000 for the three, paid online. Rheumatoid factor, ANA, CRP and HLA-B27 are arranged through a rheumatologist.
Do I need to fast for arthritis blood tests?
Not for anti-CCP, ESR or uric acid on their own. If the same visit includes a fasting sugar or cholesterol test, follow the fasting advice for that test.
My rheumatoid factor is positive. Do I have rheumatoid arthritis?
Not necessarily. Some healthy people, and people with other conditions, have a positive rheumatoid factor. The diagnosis depends on swollen joints on examination. A rheumatologist reads the result with your symptoms.
Should I test before I see a rheumatologist?
You can, and it can speed things up, but it is not required. If you are unsure which tests you need, book the consultation first and let the rheumatologist choose.
