Yellow Eyes (Jaundice) in Adults
The signs, what causes it, and when to see a hepatobiliary surgery specialist in Lagos.
Signs to look for
Yellow Eyes (Jaundice) in Adults
- Yellow whites of the eyes, then yellow skin
- Dark urine, like tea or Coca-Cola
- Pale or clay-coloured stools
- Itching all over
- Pain under the right ribs, if a stone is the cause
Jaundice is yellowing of the eyes and skin caused by too much bilirubin, a yellow pigment made when old red blood cells are broken down. The liver normally clears it into bile, which drains through the bile ducts into the bowel. Jaundice happens when the liver is inflamed, as in hepatitis, when red cells break down too fast, as in sickle cell disease, or when the bile duct is blocked by a gallstone, a narrowing or a growth. A blocked duct often comes with dark urine, pale stools and itching. Finding the cause takes blood tests and a scan.

When to See a Doctor
See a doctor within days for any new yellowing of the eyes. Go to an emergency department the same day if jaundice comes with fever and shivering, severe pain in the upper tummy, confusion or vomiting blood: these can mean an infected bile duct or liver failure.
Treatment options
- Blood tests for liver function and hepatitis
- An ultrasound scan, then CT or MRI if needed
- ERCP to clear a stone or place a stent in a blocked bile duct
- Treatment of hepatitis by a physician
- Surgery for a growth of the liver, bile duct or pancreas, where it can be removed

Common Questions
Is jaundice in adults the same as in babies?
No. Newborn jaundice is common and usually harmless. Jaundice in an adult always needs a cause found.
Can herbs or agbo clear jaundice?
No. They do not unblock a bile duct or treat hepatitis, and some herbal mixtures harm the liver. See a doctor.
Does jaundice mean liver cancer?
Usually not. Hepatitis and gallstones are far more common causes. But painless jaundice with weight loss in an older adult needs a scan quickly.
