ERCP for Bile Duct Stones at Mezo Health is priced in a written quote after a ₦35,000 consultation, because the plan and its cost depend on the assessment. The quote covers the specialist's fee for the procedure, sedation and monitoring, and x-ray screening during the procedure. Prices last checked 28 October 2026.
A thin camera goes through the mouth into the first part of the bowel, where the bile duct opens. Dye and X-rays show the blockage, and stones are pulled out or a small tube, a stent, is left to keep bile flowing. No cuts are made. It is the usual treatment when a gallstone has moved into the bile duct and caused jaundice or pancreatitis.
Also called: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, Bile duct stone removal, Biliary stent, ERCP

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
Consultant surgical opinion: ₦35,000
Your price is a written quote after the specialist has seen your scan and bloods, because clearing stones, placing a stent and the stay all change it. It does not move without your written agreement.
What your written quote covers
- The specialist's fee for the procedure
- Sedation and monitoring
- X-ray screening during the procedure
- Recovery and nursing care until you are ready to go home
- A written report you keep
Not in the quote
- The first consultation
- An MRI of the bile duct (MRCP) if one is needed first
- Removing the gallbladder afterwards, priced on its own page
- Treating pancreatitis or infection if they follow
What decides your quote
- A stent placed, and whether it is plastic or metal
- Large or many stones, needing more time or a second procedure
- An overnight stay
Many HMO plans cover ERCP for a blocked bile duct with a pre-authorisation code. Bring your HMO number and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.
Is it right for you
Who this is for
A good fit
- A gallstone stuck in the bile duct, causing jaundice, pain or abnormal liver tests
- Pancreatitis caused by a gallstone, once the specialist judges the timing right
- A narrowed or blocked bile duct that needs a stent
- A bile leak after gallbladder surgery
When it is not the right answer
- Gallstones only in the gallbladder, which are treated by removing the gallbladder
- Diagnosis alone, where an MRI scan (MRCP) can answer the question without the risks of ERCP
What happens
The pathway, step by step
- 1
Specialist assessment₦35,000
Your symptoms, liver blood tests and scan are reviewed.
- 2
An MRI if needed
An MRCP scan confirms a stone in the duct before ERCP is done.
- 3
The procedure
About thirty to ninety minutes under sedation, lying on your front.
- 4
Recovery
Watched for a few hours. Some people stay one night.
- 5
Gallbladder removal
Usually advised within weeks if you still have your gallbladder, so stones do not come back.
Afterwards
What happens afterwards
Same day
Drowsy from the sedation. Someone should take you home.
Next day
Sore throat for a day or two. Normal eating usually resumes.
Weeks after
A stent may need changing or removing later. You are told when.
Risks and limits you should know
- Pancreatitis, the commonest serious complication, usually mild
- Bleeding, especially when the duct opening is cut to remove stones
- Infection
- A tear in the bowel wall, rare
Every treatment has limits and side effects. Yours are explained before you start, and you can always say no.
Questions people ask
Is ERCP the same as an endoscopy?
It uses a similar camera, but goes further, into the bile duct, with X-rays. It is more specialised than a routine gastroscopy.
Will I still need my gallbladder removed?
Usually yes, if the stones came from it, otherwise more stones can follow. The specialist will plan both.
Am I put to sleep?
You are given sedation, so most people remember little of it. Some centres use a general anaesthetic.
