Warts and Verrucas
The signs, the danger signs that mean hospital now, and how to see a doctor by video from anywhere in Nigeria.
Signs to look for
Warts and Verrucas
- A small, rough, raised lump on the skin
- A hard, flat, painful spot on the sole of the foot, sometimes with black dots
- Clusters of small, flat, smooth bumps on the face or legs
- Warts around the nails
- Warts spreading along a line where the skin was scratched or shaved
Warts are small, rough growths on the skin caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They are most common on the hands, fingers and knees, and on the soles of the feet, where they are called verrucas and can hurt when walking. Flat warts can appear in groups on the face, legs or beard area, often spread by shaving. Warts spread by direct contact and from damp floors, and they are common in children. Most are harmless and go away on their own, although this can take a long time. Warts on the genitals are different and should be checked by a doctor.

When to See a Doctor
Go to a hospital or see a doctor promptly if a lump bleeds, changes shape or colour, grows quickly or becomes a sore that does not heal, because these are not typical of a wart and need to be checked. See a doctor for any growth on the genitals or anus, warts on the face, warts that are painful, spreading or not going away, or if you have diabetes or a weak immune system.
Treatment options
- Leaving it alone, since many warts go away on their own
- Salicylic acid gels or plasters, used daily for several weeks
- Freezing (cryotherapy), done by a doctor or nurse
- Covering warts and not sharing towels to stop spread
- Avoiding shaving over flat warts until they clear
- Specialist treatment for warts that do not respond
Common Questions
Should I cut or burn off a wart myself?
No. Cutting, burning or using strong chemicals at home can cause scarring and infection and spread the virus. Use an over-the-counter treatment as directed, or see a doctor.
Are genital warts the same?
They are caused by different types of the same virus and are passed on through sex. They need a doctor's check, and partners may need to be seen.
Can a doctor check a wart by video?
Often, yes. A dermatologist can usually recognise a wart on camera and advise on treatment, and tell you if the lump looks unusual and needs to be seen in person.
Need Help?
A skin specialist on a video call, who looks at the skin on camera, plans treatment and tells you if it needs to be seen in person.
