Signs to look for

Prediabetes

  • Usually no symptoms at all
  • An HbA1c or fasting blood sugar result in the prediabetes range
  • Darkened, velvety skin on the neck or armpits in some people
  • Weight gain around the waist
  • Symptoms of diabetes such as thirst and passing a lot of urine, which mean diabetes may already be present

Prediabetes means your blood sugar is higher than it should be, but not high enough to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. It usually has no symptoms, so it is found on a blood test, such as an HbA1c or a fasting blood sugar, often at a check-up. It matters because without changes many people go on to develop type 2 diabetes, and the raised sugar already adds to the risk of heart disease and stroke. The good news is that it can often be reversed. Losing some weight if you are overweight, being more active and changing what you eat lower the chance of developing diabetes substantially. People with a family history of diabetes, a large waist, high blood pressure, a history of diabetes in pregnancy or polycystic ovary syndrome are more likely to have it.

When to See a Doctor

Go to a hospital now if you are very thirsty, passing a lot of urine, vomiting, breathing fast, drowsy or confused, because this can be very high blood sugar. See a doctor if a test shows prediabetes, so it can be confirmed and a plan made, and have it rechecked at least once a year. An endocrinologist can review your results, your other risks such as blood pressure and cholesterol, and whether medicine would help.

Treatment options

  • Losing weight if you are overweight, even a modest amount
  • Being active most days, such as brisk walking
  • Cutting down sugary drinks, white bread, white rice and large starch portions
  • More vegetables, beans, whole grains and fibre
  • Checking blood pressure and cholesterol and treating them if high
  • Metformin or weight-loss medicine for some people, as a doctor advises
  • A repeat HbA1c test at least once a year

Common Questions

Can prediabetes be reversed?

Often, yes. Weight loss, regular activity and changes to diet can bring blood sugar back to normal and lower the chance of type 2 diabetes. It needs to be kept up, and your sugar should still be checked each year.

Do I need medicine for prediabetes?

Most people start with changes to food and activity. A doctor may suggest metformin or weight-loss medicine if your risk is high or your sugar keeps rising.

Can I discuss my results by video?

Yes. An endocrinologist can go through your blood test results on a call, explain what they mean for you, and plan the next tests and any treatment.

Need Help?

A hormone and diabetes specialist on a video call, who reads your results, plans treatment and the tests to repeat.
