The short answer

Mezo Health lets you see a registered gastroenterologist by private video call from anywhere in Nigeria, with their own fee shown before you pay. Video suits ulcer and reflux symptoms that keep coming back, H. pylori results, changes in bowel habit, hepatitis B results and deciding whether you need an endoscopy. Vomiting blood, black or bloody stool, or severe tummy pain needs a hospital now.

Go to a hospital now if you

Call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department now. Do not wait for a video call.

  • Are vomiting bright red blood, or vomit that looks like ground coffee
  • Have poo with blood in it, or poo that is black, sticky and very smelly
  • Are bleeding non-stop from the bottom, or passing a lot of blood or large clots
  • Have severe tummy pain, or a tummy that is painful to touch
  • Have chest pain that started suddenly
  • Have vomited blood and feel faint, dizzy or confused, or have cold, clammy, pale skin

Be seen in person today if you

These are not emergencies, but the NHS advises an urgent appointment. A gastroenterologist on video can tell you where to go.

  • Have tummy pain that is gradually getting worse, or has moved to the lower right side
  • Have bloody diarrhoea
  • Find it difficult or painful to swallow, or food feels stuck
  • Have ulcer symptoms with weight loss you did not try for, loss of appetite, or feeling full after very little food
  • Keep vomiting

What video handles well

  • Heartburn, reflux and indigestion that keep coming back
  • Ulcer symptoms, and H. pylori test results
  • A change in bowel habit, or constipation or diarrhoea that will not settle
  • Bloating and irritable bowel symptoms
  • Hepatitis B or abnormal liver test results: what they mean and what to monitor
  • Deciding whether you need an endoscopy or colonoscopy, and getting ready for one
  • Going through an endoscopy or colonoscopy report

What video cannot do

  • Feeling the tummy, which some problems need
  • Endoscopy and colonoscopy, which are done at an endoscopy unit
  • Tummy pain that is severe or getting worse, which needs an examination and often a scan the same day
  • Emergencies of any kind: see the warning signs below

Questions people ask

How much is a gastroenterologist consultation in Nigeria?

Each gastroenterologist sets their own video fee, shown on their button before you pay. The lowest on Mezo right now is ₦100,000. Medicines and tests are separate, and each is priced before you pay for it.

Do I need an endoscopy?

Not always. Many people with reflux or indigestion get better with treatment and never need one. The gastroenterologist weighs your age, how long you have had the symptoms and any warning signs, such as weight loss or difficulty swallowing, before advising one.

Can I get treatment for H. pylori on a video call?

Yes, when a test has confirmed it. The gastroenterologist can order the test at a partner laboratory, prescribe the treatment if it is positive, and advise when to test again to be sure it has cleared.

Can a gastroenterologist see me about hepatitis B by video?

Yes. They go through your results, order the further blood tests that show how active the infection is, and advise whether you need treatment and how often to be checked.

Do I need a referral to see a gastroenterologist on Mezo?

No. You can book a gastroenterologist directly. If another doctor has written to you or done tests, bring the letter and results as photos.

Can the gastroenterologist prescribe and order tests?

Yes, when it is right for you. A prescription is written on Mezo and can go to a partner pharmacy, where you pay on Mezo and collect it with a pickup code or have it delivered where the pharmacy delivers. Tests are ordered at a partner laboratory and priced from its own list before you pay.

What if the gastroenterologist says I need to be seen in person?

They tell you what examination, scan or procedure you need, how soon, and where. You can book it through Mezo, or ask for a call back and a care coordinator arranges it.

Something feels seriously wrong right now. What do I do?

Call 112 or go to the nearest emergency department now. Do not wait for a video call.
