Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers theatre time, intensive care for the planned first days, and reviews after discharge. Prices last checked 3 November 2026.
In coronary heart disease, the arteries that feed the heart muscle narrow. A bypass operation takes a blood vessel from the chest, leg or arm and joins it around the narrowed part, so blood reaches the heart again. It is open heart surgery and a major operation. Many people with narrowed arteries are treated instead with medicines or with angioplasty and a stent, and an angiogram decides which is right. Mezo does not run a heart or brain surgery unit. The surgeon who reviews your case tells you where the operation can be done safely, in Nigeria or elsewhere, and why.

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
Consultant surgical opinion: from ₦50,000
There is no published price. A surgeon reviews your scans and reports first and writes a plan. A written quote follows only once a hospital team that does this operation has agreed to take your case, and it does not move without your written agreement.
What your written quote covers
- The cardiac surgeon, the assistant, the anaesthetist and the perfusionist
- Theatre time
- Intensive care for the planned first days
- Your bed, nursing care and medication for the planned stay
- Reviews after discharge
Not in the quote
- The first consultation
- The angiogram and other tests before surgery
- Cardiac rehabilitation after discharge
- Unplanned intensive care or a return to theatre
What decides your quote
- How many arteries are bypassed
- Surgery on a beating heart or with a heart-lung machine
- Diabetes, kidney disease or a weak heart, which lengthen the stay
- Days in intensive care
Most HMO plans cap or exclude major heart and brain surgery. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will ask what your plan covers. You are told the cash position before anything is booked.
How we pick your surgeon
Every Mezo surgeon is MDCN verified and approved for this operation before they take a case. You meet them before you pay.
Is it right for you
Who this is for
A good fit
- Narrowing of several heart arteries, or the main left artery, on an angiogram
- Angina that medicines and stents have not controlled
- Narrowed arteries in people with diabetes, where bypass often suits better than stents
When it is not the right answer
- Chest pain or tightness at rest, pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back, sweating or breathlessness today: this may be a heart attack, go to an emergency department now
- Narrowing in one or two arteries that a stent can treat
- Mild disease controlled with medicines
What happens
The pathway, step by step
- 1
Cardiology and surgical review₦50,000
A specialist reads your angiogram, echocardiogram and reports.
- 2
A written plan
Bypass, a stent or medicines, and why, with the cardiologist's view.
- 3
Finding the operating team
Mezo helps arrange the referral to a cardiac surgery team that agrees to take the case.
- 4
A written quote
From that team, in writing, before admission.
- 5
The operation and recovery
Three to six hours under general anaesthetic, then about a week in hospital.
- 6
Follow-up₦25,000
Cardiac rehabilitation, and lifelong medicines for blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes.
Afterwards
Recovery, realistically
First week
Intensive care for a day or two, then the ward. Walking with help from the day after surgery.
Weeks 1 to 6
Tiredness and chest soreness are common. No driving for at least four weeks.
Up to 3 months
No heavy lifting while the breastbone heals. Most people are back to normal in two to three months.
Lifelong
The bypass does not cure the disease. Stopping smoking, controlling blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol keep the new vessels open.
Risks you should be told about
- Bleeding
- Wound infection, including the leg wound
- Irregular heart rhythm
- Stroke
- Kidney strain
- Memory or concentration problems for a while after surgery
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Is a stent not enough?
Often it is. Bypass tends to be advised when several arteries or the main left artery are narrowed, or in some people with diabetes. Ask both a cardiologist and a cardiac surgeon to explain the choice for you.
How long does a bypass last?
Many years for most people, especially when the artery from inside the chest wall is used. Not smoking and controlling blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol make the biggest difference.
Why is there no price on this page?
Because the number of bypasses, the time in intensive care and your other conditions change the cost widely. You get a written quote from the operating team before admission.
