A small pouch is made at the top of the stomach and joined to the small bowel, so food bypasses most of the stomach. You eat less and absorb less, and the hormones that control blood sugar change within days. It is the operation most often chosen when type 2 diabetes or acid reflux comes with the weight.

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
Weight assessment with a consultant: ₦35,000
Your price is a written all-in quote after the assessment, because your weight, your health and the tests you need change it. It does not move without your written agreement.
What your written quote covers
- The surgeon, the assistant and the anaesthetist
- Theatre time and the stapling and keyhole equipment
- Your bed and nursing care for the planned stay
- Medication while you are admitted
- Reviews with the surgeon and a dietitian in the first year
Not in the quote
- The first consultation
- Tests and specialist reviews before surgery, quoted with the operation once the surgeon knows what you need
- Vitamins and supplements after surgery, which are for life
- Care for a complication needing intensive care or a return to theatre
What decides your quote
- A higher BMI, sleep apnoea or heart disease, which change the anaesthetic plan and the stay
- A hiatus hernia found and repaired during the operation
- Previous operations on the stomach or abdomen
- A longer stay than planned
Most HMO plans in Nigeria do not cover weight loss surgery, balloons or weight loss medicines. Bring your HMO number to the consultation and the desk will ask. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price in writing before anything is booked.

What happens
The pathway, step by step
- 1
Weight assessment with the surgeon₦35,000
Your weight history, what you have tried, your medicines and your health. You leave knowing whether surgery is right for you and which operation.
- 2
Tests and reviews
Bloods, a scan, and an anaesthetic review. Many people also have a camera test of the stomach, a sleep study, a heart check and a dietitian review.
- 3
A written all-in price
The operation, the stay and the first year of reviews in one figure, in writing, before a date is set.
- 4
The pre-operative diet
Usually two weeks of a low-calorie diet before surgery to shrink the liver, which makes keyhole surgery safer.
- 5
The operation
About two to three hours by keyhole surgery under general anaesthetic.
- 6
One or two nights in hospital
Walking the same day, sipping fluids the next. Diabetes medicines are often reduced before you go home.
- 7
Reviews through the first year₦25,000
With the surgeon and a dietitian, checking weight, sugar, bloods and vitamins.
Afterwards
Recovery, realistically
Weeks 1 to 2
Liquids only. Sore wounds, settling with simple painkillers. Desk work from about two weeks.
Weeks 3 to 6
Soft and pureed food, then normal textures in small portions.
Months 1 to 18
Most of the weight comes off in this time. Blood sugar often improves far sooner.
For life
Daily vitamins, and a yearly blood check for iron, B12 and calcium.
Risks you should be told about
- A leak where the bowel is joined, uncommon but serious
- Bleeding
- Dumping: sweating, a racing heart or diarrhoea after sugary food
- Ulcers at the join, more likely in smokers
- A bowel blockage later on, needing urgent care
- Vitamin and iron deficiency without lifelong supplements
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
How much does a gastric bypass cost in Nigeria?
A bypass usually costs more than a sleeve because it takes longer. On Mezo you get one written all-in price after your assessment, with the stay and the first year of reviews in it, before you pay anything.
Will it cure my diabetes?
Many people come off some or all of their diabetes medicines after a bypass, often within weeks. It is not guaranteed, and sugar can rise again later, so checks continue.
Can a bypass be reversed?
Technically sometimes, but it is a major operation. Treat it as permanent.
Can I drink alcohol afterwards?
Alcohol is absorbed faster after a bypass and hits harder. Most surgeons advise very little, and none in the first year.
