Tympanoplasty (Eardrum Repair) at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers the ENT surgeon and the anaesthetist, plus ear packing removal and reviews after the operation. Prices last checked 3 November 2026.
A hole in the eardrum that has not closed on its own is patched with a thin graft of the patient's own tissue, usually taken from just behind or in front of the ear. The aim is a dry, closed ear that no longer discharges after a cold or a bath, and often better hearing. Most holes from an injury or a single infection heal without surgery, so this is for the ones that have not.

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
Consultant ENT opinion: from ₦50,000
Your price is a written quote after the consultation, because the operation, the anaesthetic and the stay depend on what the surgeon finds. It does not move without your written agreement.
What your written quote covers
- The ENT surgeon and the anaesthetist
- Theatre time, the operating microscope and the graft
- Recovery and, if planned, one night in hospital
- Ear packing removal and reviews after the operation
Not in the quote
- The first consultation
- The hearing test before surgery, quoted separately
- A CT scan, if the surgeon needs one
- A second operation, if the ear needs one
What decides your quote
- The size and position of the hole
- Whether the small hearing bones also need repairing
- A day case or an overnight stay
- Disease behind the eardrum that turns the operation into a mastoidectomy
If an HMO is paying, the operation needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.
How we pick your surgeon
Every Mezo surgeon is MDCN verified and approved for this operation before they take a case. You meet them before you pay.
Is it right for you
Who this is for
A good fit
- A hole in the eardrum that has not healed after about three months
- An ear that keeps discharging whenever water gets in or after a cold
- Hearing loss from the hole that affects work, school or daily life
- Someone who wants to swim or wash their hair without the ear becoming infected
When it is not the right answer
- A fresh hole from an injury or an infection, which usually heals on its own within weeks
- An ear that is actively discharging, which is treated and dried first
- Cholesteatoma, a skin cyst behind the eardrum, which needs a mastoidectomy
- A child under about seven, in some cases, where the surgeon may advise waiting
What happens
The pathway, step by step
- 1
Consultation with an ear microscope₦50,000
The hole is looked at properly, its size and position recorded, and the ear checked for active infection.
- 2
A hearing test
Audiometry shows how much hearing is lost and gives a baseline to measure the result against.
- 3
Drying the ear
Drops and keeping water out until the ear has been dry for some weeks, so the graft takes.
- 4
A written price
The operation, the anaesthetic and the stay, in writing, before a date is set.
- 5
The operation
About one to two hours under general anaesthetic, through the ear canal or a small cut behind the ear.
- 6
Reviews₦25,000
The packing comes out after a few weeks, and hearing is retested once the graft has settled.
Afterwards
Recovery, realistically
First days
Packing in the ear and a dressing. Some ear ache and dizziness, which settle. Most people go home the same day or the next.
Weeks 1 to 3
Keep the ear completely dry. Avoid blowing your nose hard, flying and heavy lifting.
Weeks 3 to 6
The packing is removed. Hearing may be muffled until it is.
After two to three months
The graft has healed, and a hearing test shows the result. Swimming is usually allowed once the surgeon has checked the ear.
Risks you should be told about
- The graft not taking, so the hole remains or comes back
- Taste change on one side of the tongue, usually temporary
- Dizziness, usually for a few days
- Hearing staying the same or, rarely, getting worse
- Ringing in the ear
- Very rarely, weakness of the face on that side
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Will a hole in my eardrum heal on its own?
Most do, within a few weeks, especially after an injury or a single infection. Surgery is considered when a hole is still there after about three months, or when it keeps the ear discharging.
Will my hearing come back?
Often it improves, sometimes a lot, but it depends on whether the hearing bones are damaged too. The hearing test before surgery helps the surgeon tell you what to expect.
Why is there no fixed price on this page?
Because some repairs are a short day case and others also rebuild the hearing bones or need a night in hospital. You get the price in writing after the surgeon has examined your ear.
