Endoscopic Sinus Surgery in Nigeria

Blocked sinus openings are widened and polyps removed with a thin telescope passed through the nostrils, so there are no cuts on the face. It is for chronic sinusitis or nasal polyps that months of proper medical treatment have not controlled. Most people go home the same day or the next morning.

₦1,200,000

What would change this price

  • A septoplasty at the same time, priced separately above
  • Repeat surgery after previous sinus surgery
  • Extensive polyps or fungal sinus disease, which lengthens the operation
  • A stay beyond one night

If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.

Who this is for

  • Chronic sinusitis lasting more than twelve weeks despite steroid sprays, saline rinses and antibiotics where they were needed
  • Nasal polyps blocking breathing or smell that steroid treatment has not controlled
  • Repeated sinus infections, several a year, with a blocked drainage pathway on CT
  • Fungal sinus disease, or a complication of sinusitis spreading towards the eye

When it is not the right answer

  • Catarrh or allergy without sinus disease on a scan
  • Anyone who has not had a proper trial of steroid spray and rinses, usually for three months
  • A polyp on one side only, or bloody discharge, which needs a biopsy before anything else

The pathway, step by step

  1. 1

ENT examination with a nasal endoscope₦35,000

A thin camera in the nose, in the clinic, to see the polyps or blockage.

  2. 2

    Medical treatment first

Steroid spray and saline rinses, usually for three months. Many people need nothing more.

  3. 3

    CT scan of the sinuses

The map the surgeon operates from.

  4. 4

    The operation

One to two and a half hours under general anaesthetic, entirely through the nostrils.

  5. 5

Home the same day or the next morning

    With rinses and written aftercare.

  6. 6

    Reviews and clean-out₦25,000

At two weeks the nose is cleaned under the camera, and healing checked at six weeks.

Recovery, realistically

Days 1 to 3

A blocked nose and some bloody discharge, like a heavy cold. Rinses start the next day.

Week 1 to 2

No hard nose blowing, heavy lifting or flying. Desk work after about a week.

Week 2 to 6

Breathing and smell improve as healing settles.

Long term

Polyp sufferers continue steroid sprays to keep them from returning.

Risks you should be told about

  • Bleeding, occasionally needing nasal packing
  • Scar tissue inside the nose, which the clean-out reduces
  • Polyps returning over the years, less so with continued sprays
  • Injury to the eye socket or the base of the skull, rare

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

Will the polyps come back?

They can, because polyps are a condition of the lining rather than a one-off growth. Steroid sprays after surgery keep most people clear for years.

Will my face be cut or bruised?

No. Everything is done through the nostrils.

Is this the same as septoplasty?

No. Septoplasty straightens the wall between the nostrils. Sinus surgery opens the sinuses. Some people need both, done together.

Can I fly afterwards?

Wait at least two weeks, and longer if your surgeon advises it.
