Bladder stones are hard lumps of minerals that form inside the bladder when urine sits there too long. In adults they nearly always mean the bladder is not emptying properly, most often because of an enlarged prostate, a urethral stricture or nerve damage to the bladder. Long-term catheters and repeated infections make them more likely too. They are different from kidney stones, which form in the kidney, though a small kidney stone can travel down and grow in the bladder. Most bladder stones are removed through a telescope, and the cause is treated so they do not come back.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the lower tummy, or at the tip of the penis
  • A stream that stops suddenly and starts again when you move
  • Blood in the urine, often at the end
  • Passing urine often, especially at night
  • Cloudy urine or repeated urine infections
  • Difficulty starting to pass urine

When to See a Doctor

See a urologist if you have pain or blood when passing urine, a stream that stops and starts, or urine infections that keep coming back. Go to an emergency department now if you cannot pass urine at all, or if you have fever and shivering with urinary symptoms, which can mean a serious infection.

Treatment options

  • An ultrasound or X-ray to find the stone, and a urine test for infection
  • Cystolitholapaxy: the stone broken up and washed out through a telescope
  • An open operation through the lower tummy for a very large stone
  • Treating the cause: TURP for an enlarged prostate, or repair of a stricture
  • Antibiotics for any infection before surgery

Common Questions

Can bladder stones pass on their own?

Very small ones sometimes do. Most are too big, and because they form when the bladder does not empty, they tend to stay and grow. Most need removing.

How are bladder stones different from kidney stones?

Kidney stones form in the kidney and cause pain in the side when they move. Bladder stones form in the bladder, usually because it does not empty, and cause pain low in the tummy and trouble passing urine.

Do children get bladder stones?

Yes, particularly in parts of northern Nigeria, often linked to diet and dehydration. Children with urinary symptoms should be seen by a paediatrician or paediatric surgeon.
