Gastroenterology and Endoscopy

Gastroscopy in Lagos

A thin flexible camera is passed through the mouth to look at the gullet, the stomach and the first part of the small bowel. It shows what years of antacids have not: an ulcer, inflammation from reflux, H. pylori, or the rarer causes that need finding early. It takes about fifteen minutes in our endoscopy suite on Victoria Island, and you go home the same day.

Also called: Upper GI endoscopy, OGD, Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy, Stomach camera test, Endoscopy for ulcer

What would change this price

  • Nothing on the day. Biopsies, including the H. pylori test from the stomach lining, are included
  • Treatment that needs a separate procedure, such as stretching a narrowing, which is planned and priced with you first

Most HMO plans cover endoscopy only with a pre-authorisation code from the HMO, and many limit it to a named hospital. The price here is the cash price, paid online. If you would rather use your HMO, ask us first and we will tell you what your plan covers before anything is booked.

Who this is for

  • 'Ulcer' pain or indigestion that keeps coming back despite treatment
  • New indigestion from about forty-five, or any age with weight loss
  • Difficulty swallowing, or food sticking on the way down
  • Heartburn most days for weeks, or reflux that medicine no longer controls
  • Persistent vomiting, or unexplained iron deficiency anaemia
  • Checking that an ulcer has healed, or follow-up of Barrett's oesophagus

When it is not the right answer

  • Vomiting blood or passing black stools now: go to an emergency department, where an urgent endoscopy can be done
  • Mild indigestion under forty-five with no warning signs, where an H. pylori test and treatment usually come first

The pathway, step by step

  1. 1

    Book and pay online₦350,000

Choose a date, pay the fixed price and tell us about your medicines. Acid medicines such as omeprazole are usually stopped two weeks before, so the test can see what they have been hiding; we tell you what to stop and when.

  2. 2

    Before you go

Nothing to eat for six hours and nothing to drink for two. Bring a list of your medicines.

  3. 3

    On the day

Your throat is numbed with a spray, and you can have sedation as well. The camera passes over the tongue; it does not affect your breathing. It takes about five to fifteen minutes.

  4. 4

    Recovery and going home

With throat spray alone you can leave soon after. With sedation you rest on a recovery bed for about an hour and someone must take you home.

  5. 5

    Your report and the review

The specialist tells you what was seen before you leave, and the written report goes into your Mezo account. A doctor then goes through it with you by video and agrees the plan, including eradication treatment if H. pylori is found.

What happens afterwards

First hour

Nothing to eat or drink until the throat spray wears off, so you do not choke.

Same day

A sore throat and some bloating are normal. Eat normally once you can swallow comfortably.

Next day

Back to work and normal activity.

Risks and limits you should know

  • Sore throat for a day or two
  • Reaction to the sedation
  • Bleeding after a biopsy, usually minor
  • A tear in the gullet or stomach (perforation), rare

Every treatment has limits and side effects. Yours are explained before you start, and you can always say no.

Questions people ask

How much does an endoscopy cost in Lagos?

A gastroscopy on Mezo is ₦350,000, one fixed price paid online, with sedation, any biopsy, the specialist's written report and a doctor's review all included. Nothing is paid on the day. MezoCare members pay ₦300,000. With a colonoscopy in the same session it is ₦750,000.

Is an endoscopy painful?

No, though it is not pleasant. The throat spray stops most of the gagging, and sedation makes you relaxed and drowsy. Most people say it was easier than they expected.

I have had ulcer for years. Do I really need a camera test?

Not always. Under about forty-five with no warning signs, a stool test for H. pylori and treatment usually comes first. But pain that keeps returning after treatment, or any weight loss, difficulty swallowing or anaemia, needs the camera, because years of antacids can hide something that should have been found.

Can it test for H. pylori?

Yes. A tiny sample of the stomach lining can be tested during the procedure. Acid medicines can hide the infection, which is why we ask you to stop them two weeks before.

Can I drive home?

Not after sedation: someone must take you. With throat spray alone, you usually can.

Where is it done?

In our endoscopy suite on Victoria Island, Lagos, with its own recovery beds. The exact address and your time come with the booking.
