HbA1c test price in Nigeria

An HbA1c test costs ₦24,000 on Mezo, paid online and done at a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site. It reflects your average blood sugar over roughly the last two to three months, so it is used to diagnose type 2 diabetes and to check how well treatment is working. You do not need to fast for it.

The whole price of the test: the sample taken at the site and the written result. Paid online before you go, the same at every BeaconHealth Diagnostics site.

What the test is for

Sugar in the blood sticks to haemoglobin in red cells, and HbA1c measures how much has stuck. Because red cells last for a few months, the result is an average, not a snapshot of one morning.

HbA1c depends on normal red blood cells. Tell your doctor your genotype, and mention anaemia or a recent blood transfusion: these can make HbA1c read wrongly, and a fasting blood sugar may be used instead.

When a doctor asks for it

  • Symptoms of diabetes, such as thirst, passing urine often or weight loss without trying
  • A raised sugar on another test
  • With type 2 diabetes, NICE advises an HbA1c every 3 to 6 months until it is stable on unchanging treatment, then every 6 months

How to prepare

  • No fasting for HbA1c on its own.
  • If the same visit includes a fasting blood sugar or a lipid profile, fast for 8 to 12 hours, water only.
