Children learn to understand and use words at different speeds, and many late talkers catch up. But some delays are a sign that a child needs help, and help works best when it starts early. Common causes include hearing loss, often from glue ear, a specific speech or language disorder, autism, or global developmental delay. Growing up with more than one language does not cause speech delay. A doctor reviews the child's development, arranges a hearing test, and refers to a speech and language therapist or developmental specialist when needed.

Common Questions

Does speaking two languages at home cause delay?

No. Children can learn two or more languages from birth. They may mix words at first, but bilingualism does not cause speech delay.

Should I wait and see if my child catches up?

If your child is behind the milestones, it is better to get a check now. Many children do catch up, but a hearing problem or another cause is easier to help early.

Can a paediatrician assess speech by video?

A video call is a good first step: the doctor can take a developmental history, watch your child play and talk, and arrange a hearing test and referrals.

Need Help?

A children's doctor on a video call, who tells you whether your child needs to be examined in person.
