Semen is the fluid that carries sperm, and most of it comes from the glands around the prostate, not the testicles. Its thickness changes from day to day. It is often thinner and more watery after ejaculating several times in a short period, when you are dehydrated, or after a long illness, and it normally becomes more liquid within minutes of coming out. Watery semen on its own does not mean you are infertile, and thick semen does not mean you are fertile. What matters is the number of sperm, how well they move and their shape, and none of these can be judged by looking. If you and your partner have been trying for a baby for a year without success, or six months if she is 36 or older, the answer is a semen analysis, a simple laboratory test you can book yourself. Herbal mixtures and sperm boosters sold online are not a substitute for it.

When to See a Doctor
Go to a hospital or emergency department now for sudden, severe pain in a testicle, which can be a twisted testicle and needs surgery within hours. See a doctor if you have been trying for a baby for a year without success (six months if your partner is 36 or older), if you notice blood in your semen, a lump, pain or swelling in your testicles, or if your semen has changed and you also have burning when you urinate or a discharge, which can mean an infection.

- A semen analysis at a laboratory, repeated about three months later if the first is abnormal
- Treating an infection when one is found
- Drinking less alcohol, stopping smoking and losing weight if overweight
- Loose-fitting underwear, and keeping the testicles away from heat such as a laptop on the lap
- Avoiding anabolic steroids, tramadol and recreational drugs, which can lower sperm count
- Varicocele repair when swollen veins are affecting sperm
- Fertility treatment such as IVF with ICSI when the count stays low

Common Questions
Watery sperm is a sign of what?
Usually nothing serious. Semen is often thinner after frequent ejaculation, when you are dehydrated, or after illness. It can sometimes go with a low sperm count, but you cannot tell by looking. A semen analysis is the only way to know.
Can I get pregnant with watery sperm?
Many men with thin semen father children without any help. If you have been trying for a year, or six months if your partner is 36 or older, both of you should be checked, starting with a semen analysis for you.
What food makes sperm thick?
No food makes semen thick or fertile on its own. A healthy weight, not smoking, drinking less alcohol and avoiding steroids and recreational drugs do more for sperm than any one food or booster.
