It is the sperm test: it counts the sperm, checks how well they move and their shape, and on this panel also grows the sample for infection (seminal fluid analysis with M/C/S). What the test is for
When a couple has trouble conceiving, the cause can lie with the man, the woman or both, so both are tested from the start. A semen analysis is simple, and it can save months of tests on one partner alone.
The laboratory compares your result with the World Health Organization's reference values. Sperm counts vary from one sample to the next, so NICE advises that an abnormal result is repeated, ideally three months later, or as soon as possible if very few or no sperm are seen.
A low result is a starting point, not a verdict. A doctor reads it with your history and, where needed, a male hormone test (₦65,000).

- Before fertility treatment
- A varicocele found on examination or a scan
How to prepare
- Do not ejaculate for 2 to 7 days before the sample, the window the WHO laboratory manual uses.
- Ask the site when you book whether to produce the sample there, in a private room, or bring it from home, and how quickly it must reach them. Collect the whole sample by masturbation into the clean pot the site gives you.
- Do not use an ordinary condom or a lubricant to collect it: they can harm sperm.

How do I get my result?
