Dental check-up, scale and polish

A check-up is a look at every tooth, your gums and the rest of your mouth, with an X-ray if the dentist needs one. A scale and polish removes the hard deposit (tartar) that brushing cannot. Root canal treatment saves a tooth whose nerve is infected or dying, instead of taking it out. The dentist removes the infected tissue from inside the tooth, cleans and seals the root canals, and then restores the tooth, often with a crown on a back tooth. It usually takes one to three visits. The price depends on which tooth it is, because back teeth have more canals.
Crowns and bridges

A crown is a cap that covers a weak or broken tooth, often after root canal treatment. A bridge replaces a missing tooth by fixing a false tooth to crowns on the teeth either side. Both are made to fit in a dental laboratory, so they take two visits or more. The price depends on the material and the number of units, and you are told it before the tooth is prepared.
Dentures

A denture is a removable plate of false teeth. A partial denture fills one or more gaps and clips to your own teeth; a complete denture replaces all the teeth in the upper or lower jaw. Acrylic dentures are the most common; flexible dentures bend slightly and have no metal clasps; cobalt-chrome dentures are thinner and stronger. It usually takes several visits, and you are told the price before the impressions are taken.
