Spinal Tumour Surgery at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers theatre time and the equipment for the operation, analysis of the tissue removed, and reviews with the surgeon after discharge. Prices last checked 3 November 2026.
A tumour in the spine can press on the spinal cord or the nerves, causing back pain, weakness, numbness or trouble with the bladder and bowel. Surgery removes the tumour or relieves the pressure, and sometimes the spine is held with screws and rods afterwards. Some tumours start in the spine; many have spread there from cancer elsewhere, and are treated with radiotherapy as well as, or instead of, surgery. Mezo does not run a heart or brain surgery unit. The surgeon who reviews your case tells you where the operation can be done safely, in Nigeria or elsewhere, and why.

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
Consultant surgical opinion: from ₦50,000
There is no published price. A surgeon reviews your scans and reports first and writes a plan. A written quote follows only once a hospital team that does this operation has agreed to take your case, and it does not move without your written agreement.
What your written quote covers
- The surgeon, the assistant and the anaesthetist
- Theatre time and the equipment for the operation
- Your bed, nursing care and medication for the planned stay
- Analysis of the tissue removed
- Reviews with the surgeon after discharge
Not in the quote
- The first consultation
- MRI and CT scans
- Screws and rods, where the spine needs fixing
- Radiotherapy or chemotherapy
- Rehabilitation after discharge
What decides your quote
- Whether the tumour is inside the cord, beside it, or in the bone of the spine
- How many levels of the spine are involved
- Fixing the spine with screws and rods
- Days in intensive care or a longer stay
Most HMO plans cap or exclude major heart and brain surgery. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will ask what your plan covers. You are told the cash position before anything is booked.
How we pick your surgeon
Every Mezo surgeon is MDCN verified and approved for this operation before they take a case. You meet them before you pay.
Is it right for you
Who this is for
A good fit
- A tumour in or beside the spinal cord seen on MRI that the surgeon advises removing
- Pressure on the spinal cord from a tumour, causing weakness or numbness
- A spine made unstable by a tumour in the bone
When it is not the right answer
- New weakness in the legs, numbness between the legs, or loss of bladder or bowel control today: go to an emergency department now
- Back pain from a slipped disc or wear and tear, which is a different operation (spinal decompression)
- Some spread cancers that are better treated with radiotherapy alone
What happens
The pathway, step by step
- 1
Consultation and scan review₦50,000
A surgeon reads your MRI and reports and examines your strength and feeling.
- 2
A written plan
Surgery, radiotherapy or both, and in what order, often agreed with cancer doctors.
- 3
Finding the operating team
Mezo helps arrange the referral to a spinal or neurosurgical team that agrees to take the case.
- 4
A written quote
From that team, in writing, before admission.
- 5
The operation
Under general anaesthetic, through the back of the spine in most cases.
- 6
Recovery and rehabilitation₦25,000
Walking with physiotherapy as soon as it is safe. The tissue result guides any further treatment.
Afterwards
Recovery, realistically
First days
Pain relief and getting up with a physiotherapist when safe.
Weeks 1 to 2
Most people go home within this time, depending on strength and walking.
Weeks 2 to 12
No heavy lifting. Physiotherapy builds strength and walking.
Afterwards
Repeat MRI scans, and radiotherapy where advised. Recovery of strength depends on how weak the legs were before surgery.
Risks you should be told about
- Bleeding or infection
- New or worse weakness or numbness
- Leak of spinal fluid from the wound
- Bladder or bowel problems
- Blood clots in the legs or lungs
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
How fast does spinal cord pressure need treatment?
Fast. New weakness, numbness or loss of bladder control from pressure on the cord is an emergency, because strength that is lost can stay lost. Go to an emergency department the same day.
Is this the same as surgery for a slipped disc?
No. A slipped disc or narrowing from wear and tear is treated with a spinal decompression, a different and usually smaller operation.
Why is there no price on this page?
Because the tumour, the levels involved and any fixing of the spine change the cost widely. You get a written quote from the operating team before admission.
