Surgeon review and a written plan

Neurosurgery in Nigeria: a surgeon's review before you decide

Consultant care in Lagos, with the fee set out before you book.

A brain or spine operation is one of the biggest decisions a family makes, and many Nigerian families first hear the word on a scan report with no one to explain it. Mezo does not run a neurosurgery unit. What it offers is a surgeon who reads the scans, explains in plain words what they show, and writes a plan: whether an operation is needed, what kind, and which team can do it safely, in Nigeria or elsewhere. A written quote follows only when a team that does the operation has agreed to take the case.

How we write and reviewAbout our pricesReport an error

What we treat

  • Brain tumours, including meningiomas and gliomas
  • Tumours in or beside the spinal cord
  • Hydrocephalus, and shunts that have blocked or become infected
  • Spina bifida in newborns and children
  • Second opinions on a brain or spine operation already advised

How care works here

  1. 1

    Send the scans

The MRI or CT images themselves, on a disc or a download link, with the reports and any letters. Photos of paper results are fine.

  2. 2

    A surgeon reads the case

A consultation, or a written second opinion on the records you already have, with the surgeon's name on it.

  3. 3

    A written plan

Whether surgery is advised, what else may be needed first or after, and the kind of team and intensive care the operation needs.

  4. 4

A quote only from a team that will operate

Mezo helps arrange the referral. The price is written by the team that agrees to take the case, before admission.

Questions people ask

Does Mezo do brain surgery?

Not in its own unit. Mezo gives you a surgeon's review of the scans and a written plan, and helps arrange the referral to a neurosurgical team that does the operation. You are told honestly if the operation is better done elsewhere.

Someone has had a head injury. What should we do?

Go to an emergency department now if they were knocked out, are drowsy or confused, vomit, have a fit, have clear fluid from the nose or ears, or have new weakness. A head injury is not a booking.

Why is there no price on these pages?

Because the operation, the time in intensive care and the treatment after it differ widely from one case to another. You get a written quote from the operating team before admission.

Can I use my HMO?

Many plans cap or exclude major brain and spine surgery. Bring your HMO number and the desk will ask what your plan covers before anything is booked.
