The price is ₦6,500,000 per joint, all-in: the surgeon, anaesthetist, theatre, a standard implant, the ward stay, inpatient physiotherapy and the six-week review. A 50% deposit holds a place. The camp goes ahead once enough places are booked; if it does not, the deposit is refunded in full or moved to the next date.
Daddy can't put his own socks on any more.
You saw it on your last visit home. He sat on the edge of the bed and tried three times before he asked you to do it. He made a joke of it. You didn't laugh.
He has given up the evening walk round the estate. He gets up from the sofa in stages: a hand on the armrest, a breath, then the rest of him. He says the new car is too low.
He thinks hip surgery is for people who can't walk at all.
"I'll manage. I'm not an invalid."
Trouble with socks and shoes, pain in the groin or thigh, standing up in stages. These are the signs of a worn hip.
What is happening
Hip arthritis often hurts in the groin or down the thigh rather than in the hip itself. A hip replacement swaps the worn joint for an implant, takes the pain away and gives him back his walk.
If you wait
A stiff, painful hip makes falls more likely, and a fall at his age can mean a fracture.
