Mummy sat down for the whole of your sister's wedding.
She was always first on the floor at every party. This time she stayed in her chair while the band played her favourite highlife, smiling and waving everyone else on.
At church she uses the side entrance now, the one without steps. She lowers herself into the car with both hands on the door, one leg at a time. She has started sending the driver to the market she has used for thirty years.
When you asked, she laughed it off.
"It's just age. Old women don't dance."
It isn't age. It's her knees, and knees can be replaced.
What is happening
When the cartilage in a knee wears through, bone rubs on bone and painkillers stop helping. A knee replacement resurfaces the worn joint with an implant. Physiotherapy starts the day after surgery, and most people walk with a frame before they go home.
If you wait
Every month she walks less, the muscles around the knee weaken, and recovery gets harder.
