Cradle cap is a common, harmless skin condition in babies, in which greasy, yellow, white or brown scales form on the scalp, and sometimes on the eyebrows, behind the ears or in the nappy area. It usually appears in the first two or three months and clears by itself over weeks to months. It is not caused by poor hygiene, is not an allergy, and is not contagious. It does not usually itch or bother the baby. Gentle washing and softening the scales with a little oil are usually all that is needed.

Symptoms

  • Greasy yellow, white or brown scales or crusts on the scalp
  • Patches that may flake off
  • Sometimes scaly patches on the eyebrows, behind the ears or in skin folds
  • A baby who is otherwise well and not bothered by it

When to See a Doctor

See a doctor if the patches spread beyond the scalp, become red, swollen, itchy, weeping or bleeding, or have not improved after a few weeks of gentle care. Go to a hospital if the skin looks infected and your baby has a fever, is not feeding, or is drowsy.

Treatment options

  • Washing the scalp with a mild baby shampoo
  • Softening the scales with a little baby oil or plain vegetable oil, then brushing gently with a soft brush
  • Washing the oil out afterwards
  • Leaving the scales to come away in their own time, rather than picking them
  • A medicated cream or shampoo from a doctor if it is severe or spreading

Common Questions

Should I pick off the scales?

No. Picking can make the skin sore and lead to infection. Soften them with oil and let them come away gently over days.

Will cradle cap make my baby lose hair?

Some hair may come away with the scales, but it grows back once the cradle cap clears.

Is it eczema?

Cradle cap is usually greasy and does not itch. Eczema is dry, itchy and often on the face and skin creases. A doctor can tell them apart.
