Tongue-tie is when the strip of skin connecting the underside of the tongue to the floor of the mouth is short or tight, so the tongue cannot move freely. Many babies with tongue-tie feed well and need no treatment. In some, it makes it hard to latch on and breastfeed, causing sore nipples for the mother and a baby who feeds for a long time or gains weight slowly. When tongue-tie is causing feeding problems, a quick procedure called a frenotomy, in which a trained clinician cuts the tight band, can help. Feeding support should come first.

Common Questions
Does every tongue-tie need cutting?
No. Many babies with tongue-tie feed well. A frenotomy is advised only when it is causing feeding problems that help with the latch has not fixed.
Does a frenotomy hurt?
It is quick, and most babies cry briefly and then feed. It should be done by a trained clinician, in a clean setting.
Will tongue-tie affect my child's speech?
Usually not. Most children with tongue-tie learn to speak normally. A speech therapist can assess a child whose speech is a concern.
