Nosebleeds are common in children and are usually harmless. Most come from small blood vessels at the front of the nose, which bleed when the inside of the nose is dry, picked, rubbed, or after a cold. They are more common in dry, dusty harmattan weather. Firm pressure on the soft part of the nose stops most nosebleeds within ten to fifteen minutes. Frequent or heavy nosebleeds, or nosebleeds with easy bruising or bleeding elsewhere, need a doctor to check for a cause.

Symptoms

  • Bleeding from one or both nostrils
  • Bleeding that starts after picking, a knock or a cold
  • Blood swallowed, which can cause vomiting of dark blood
  • Crusting inside the nose between nosebleeds

When to See a Doctor

See a doctor if your child has nosebleeds often, if they bruise easily or bleed from the gums, or if something may be stuck in the nose. Go to a hospital emergency department if a nosebleed does not stop after twenty minutes of firm pressure, the bleeding is very heavy, it follows a hard blow to the head, or your child is pale, dizzy or faint.

Treatment options

  • Sitting the child up, leaning forward, and pinching the soft part of the nose firmly for ten to fifteen minutes
  • Spitting out blood rather than swallowing it
  • Avoiding picking, blowing hard and hot drinks for a day afterwards
  • Petroleum jelly or a saline gel inside the nose in dry weather
  • Cautery or nasal cream from a doctor for frequent nosebleeds

Common Questions

Should my child tilt their head back?

No. Tilting the head back makes blood run down the throat, which can cause choking or vomiting. Sit up and lean forward instead.

Are frequent nosebleeds a sign of something serious?

Usually not, but frequent nosebleeds with easy bruising, bleeding gums or tiredness should be checked by a doctor, who may test the blood.

Does harmattan cause nosebleeds?

Dry, dusty air dries the inside of the nose, which makes it more likely to bleed. A little petroleum jelly inside the nostrils at night can help.
