Amputation and Limb Salvage Surgery at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. Most of the work is saving limbs: cleaning infected bone, treating crushed limbs after an accident, and dealing with gangrene from a splint tied too tightly before it spreads. When a limb cannot be saved, or saving it would leave a painful, useless limb, a planned amputation at the right level, with a well-shaped stump, lets you walk again with an artificial limb. The plan includes rehabilitation and referral for the limb fitting. Your price is a written quote after the surgeon has seen you, because the level, the infection and the stay change it a great deal.

How the price is set

Written quote after consultation

Orthopaedic consultation: from ₦50,000

Your price is a written quote after the surgeon has examined the limb and its blood supply, because the operation, any infection and the stay change it a great deal. It does not move without your written agreement.

What your written quote covers

  • The surgeon, the assistant and the anaesthetist
  • Theatre time
  • Your bed and nursing care for the planned stay
  • Medication while you are admitted
  • Inpatient physiotherapy, starting before discharge
  • Wound reviews with the surgeon after discharge

Not in the quote

  • The first consultation
  • Scans of the blood vessels, if needed
  • The artificial limb and its fitting, arranged with a limb-fitting centre
  • Unplanned intensive care or a return to theatre

What decides your quote

  • Infection needing more than one operation to clean the wound
  • The level of the amputation
  • Diabetes or kidney disease needing extra care during the stay
  • A longer stay than planned

If an HMO is paying, the operation needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.

How we pick your surgeon

Every Mezo surgeon is MDCN verified and approved for this operation before they take a case. You meet them before you pay.

Is it right for you

Who this is for

A good fit

  • Gangrene of the foot or leg, from diabetes, poor circulation or a tight splint
  • A severe infection of bone that has not responded to other treatment
  • A crushed limb after an accident that cannot be reconstructed
  • A painful, deformed or useless limb after old injuries, where an amputation would let you walk better
  • A stump from an earlier amputation that is painful or will not fit a limb

When it is not the right answer

  • A limb that can still be saved, which is always assessed first
  • A decision made in an emergency without a surgeon who can offer limb salvage, where a second opinion is possible in time

What happens

The pathway, step by step

  1. 1

    Emergency care first

A cold, black or smelling limb goes to an emergency department now, not to a booking.

  2. 2

    Consultation with the surgeon₦50,000

Examination of the limb, its blood supply and any infection, and an honest talk about saving it.

  3. 3

    Tests

Blood tests, X-rays and sometimes a scan of the blood vessels, with diabetes controlled before surgery.

  4. 4

    A written price

The operation and the stay, in writing, before admission.

  5. 5

    The operation

Cleaning and limb salvage, or an amputation at the level that heals best and fits a limb.

  6. 6

    Rehabilitation₦25,000

Physiotherapy from the first days, then referral for the artificial limb once the stump has healed.

Afterwards

Recovery, realistically

First week

Wound care, pain relief and getting out of bed with the physiotherapist.

Weeks 2 to 6

The wound heals and the stump is shaped with bandages or a sock. Exercises keep the joints moving.

Months 2 to 4

Fitting and training with an artificial limb, once the stump has settled.

After that

Many people walk again with a limb, and the fitting is adjusted as the stump changes.

Risks you should be told about

  • Infection or slow healing of the stump, more likely with diabetes or poor circulation
  • Phantom limb pain, which often eases with time and treatment
  • The need for a further operation at a higher level
  • Blood clots in the legs or lungs
  • Stiffness of the knee or hip if exercises are not kept up

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

Can my leg be saved?

Often it can, if it is seen early. A surgeon who does limb salvage looks at the blood supply, the infection and the bone before an amputation is decided. Ask for that opinion if there is time.

Will I walk again after an amputation?

Many people do, with an artificial limb and rehabilitation. A below knee amputation, where possible, makes walking easier. The level is chosen with this in mind.

How does a bone-setter's splint lead to amputation?

A splint tied tightly over a swelling limb can cut off its blood supply, and the limb dies. A tight, painful, cold or numb limb under a splint is an emergency.
