Spinal Fusion Surgery at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. Two or more bones of the spine are joined so they heal as one, held with screws and rods and often a spacer in place of the disc. It is used when a vertebra has slipped forward and is pressing on nerves, when the spine is unstable after an injury or infection, or when nerves cannot be freed safely without fixing the spine. It is often done together with a decompression. Your price is a written quote after examination and your MRI, because the number of levels and the implants change it a great deal.
Also called: Lumbar fusion, Spine fixation, Pedicle screw fixation, Posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF), Transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF), Neck fusion (ACDF)

Is it right for you
Who this is for
A good fit
- A slipped vertebra (spondylolisthesis) with leg pain, numbness or weakness that has not settled with treatment
- A spine made unstable by an injury, an infection such as spinal tuberculosis, or earlier surgery
- Narrowing of the spinal canal where freeing the nerves would leave the spine unstable
- A damaged disc in the neck pressing on the spinal cord or a nerve
When it is not the right answer
- Back pain on its own, without nerve symptoms or instability, which is usually better treated with exercise and physiotherapy
- A slipped disc that can be treated by removing the disc fragment alone, on the spinal decompression page
- Anyone not yet fit for a major operation, until that is improved

Questions people ask
Is spinal fusion the same as disc surgery?
No. Disc surgery removes the part of a disc pressing on a nerve and leaves the spine moving. Fusion joins two bones so they stop moving. Many people with sciatica need only the disc operation, on the spinal decompression page.
Will I be able to bend after a fusion?
Yes. Most fusions join one or two levels of the lower back, and the rest of the spine and the hips still move. Most people notice little loss of bending once healed.
Can spinal fusion be done in Nigeria?
Yes, by spine surgeons with the theatre imaging and implants it needs. You see the surgeon first, and you are told honestly whether an operation is right for you.
