Bunion Surgery at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers theatre time, screws or plates named in your quote, and a post-operative shoe. Prices last checked 3 November 2026.
A bunion is a bony bump at the base of the big toe, where the toe has drifted towards the others. Surgery straightens it by cutting the bone, moving it into line and holding it with small screws, and by rebalancing the soft tissues around the joint. Shaving the bump alone does not last. Most operations are a day case. Your price is a written quote after the surgeon has examined your foot and its X-rays, because the correction needed differs from foot to foot.

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
Orthopaedic consultation: from ₦50,000
Your price is a written quote after the consultation and standing X-rays of your foot, because the correction and the screws needed differ from foot to foot. It does not move without your written agreement.
What your written quote covers
- The surgeon, the assistant and the anaesthetist
- Theatre time
- Screws or plates named in your quote
- A post-operative shoe
- Your stay, usually a day case
- Dressing changes and reviews with the surgeon
Not in the quote
- The first consultation and the X-rays
- Crutches, if you do not already have them
- Surgery on the other foot, quoted separately
What decides your quote
- Correcting the smaller toes at the same operation
- Fusing the big toe joint where it is worn by arthritis
- Both feet at once
If an HMO is paying, the operation needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.
How we pick your surgeon
Every Mezo surgeon is MDCN verified and approved for this operation before they take a case. You meet them before you pay.
Is it right for you
Who this is for
A good fit
- A bunion that is painful most days despite wider shoes and pads
- A big toe pushing into the second toe and deforming it
- Pain that limits walking or work
When it is not the right answer
- A bunion that does not hurt, for looks alone, because the recovery is long
- Poor circulation to the foot, until it has been assessed
- Uncontrolled diabetes, until blood sugar is better controlled, because wound healing suffers
- Anyone who cannot keep weight off the front of the foot for the first weeks
What happens
The pathway, step by step
- 1
Consultation with the surgeon₦50,000
Examination of the foot and how you walk, and a talk about your shoes and work.
- 2
Standing X-rays
These measure the angle of the toe and show any arthritis in the joint.
- 3
A written price
The correction, the screws and the stay, in writing, before you agree a date.
- 4
The operation
Under a general anaesthetic or a block that numbs the foot.
- 5
Home in a special shoe
You walk on the heel in the post-operative shoe and keep the foot raised.
- 6
Follow-up₦25,000
Wound checks, then an X-ray at about six weeks to confirm the bone is healing.
Afterwards
Recovery, realistically
First two weeks
Foot raised most of the day. Short walks on the heel in the special shoe.
Weeks 2 to 6
Stitches out. Walking more in the special shoe. Swelling is normal.
Weeks 6 to 12
Back into a wide, soft shoe. Driving once you can brake safely.
Three to six months
Swelling settles. Most people are back in ordinary shoes and normal activity.
Risks you should be told about
- Swelling of the foot, which can last for months
- Infection
- Stiffness of the big toe
- Numbness near the scar
- The bunion coming back over time
- The bone being slow to heal, or a screw needing removal
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Do bunions come back after surgery?
They can, but it is uncommon after a proper correction of the bone. Shaving the bump alone is the operation most likely to fail, which is why it is rarely done on its own.
When can I walk after bunion surgery?
Usually the same day, on the heel, in a special shoe. Normal walking in ordinary shoes takes about six to twelve weeks.
Can both feet be done at once?
Sometimes, but walking is much harder for the first weeks. Most people have one foot done, then the other a few months later.
