A stoma is an opening of the bowel on the tummy, with a bag to collect stool. Many are made to be temporary: after an emergency operation for a perforated bowel or a blockage, after injury, or to protect a join after bowel cancer surgery. Reversal rejoins the bowel and closes the opening, so stool passes the normal way again.

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
Consultant surgical opinion: from ₦50,000
Your price is a written quote after the surgeon has seen your operation notes and the test of the join, because a loop stoma closure and a Hartmann's reversal are very different operations. It does not move without your written agreement.
What your written quote covers
- The surgeon, the assistant and the anaesthetist
- Theatre time
- Your bed and nursing care for the planned stay
- Medication while you are admitted
- A review with the surgeon after discharge
Not in the quote
- The first consultation
- The X-ray contrast test or camera test of the bowel before reversal
- Stoma bags before the operation
- Unplanned intensive care or a return to theatre
What decides your quote
- A loop stoma closed through the stoma site, or a Hartmann's reversal through the abdomen
- Keyhole or open surgery
- Scar tissue from the earlier operation
- A longer stay than planned
If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.
How we pick your surgeon
Every Mezo surgeon is MDCN verified and approved for this operation before they take a case. You meet them before you pay.
Is it right for you
Who this is for
A good fit
- A temporary loop ileostomy or colostomy made to protect a bowel join, once the join has healed
- A colostomy made in an emergency (a Hartmann's operation), once you have recovered
- A stoma made after typhoid perforation, injury or a twisted bowel, once the bowel has healed
When it is not the right answer
- A permanent stoma, made because the back passage or its muscle was removed
- Anyone still having chemotherapy, or not yet recovered from the first operation
- People whose bowel control was poor before, where a stoma may give a better life
What happens
The pathway, step by step
- 1
Consultation with the surgeon₦50,000
Your first operation, its reason and your recovery are reviewed.
- 2
Testing the bowel
A contrast X-ray or a camera test checks that the join or the remaining bowel has healed.
- 3
A written price
For the operation and the stay, before a date is set.
- 4
The operation
Under general anaesthetic: about an hour for a loop closure, longer for a Hartmann's reversal.
- 5
Recovery in hospital
Usually three to seven days, until the bowel works and you are eating.
- 6
Review₦25,000
Wound check and bowel habit with the surgeon.
Afterwards
Recovery, realistically
First weeks
Bowel motions are often frequent, loose and urgent at first. This settles over weeks to months.
Weeks 2 to 6
No heavy lifting while the wound heals. Pelvic floor exercises help control.
Afterwards
Most people get back to a settled bowel habit, though it may differ from before.
Risks you should be told about
- A leak where the bowel is joined
- Wound infection at the old stoma site
- The bowel being slow to start working
- A hernia at the old stoma site
- Frequent or urgent bowel motions for a time
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Can every stoma be reversed?
No. Temporary stomas usually can. A stoma made because the back passage was removed is permanent. The surgeon will tell you which you have.
How long should I wait before reversal?
Usually at least three months after the first operation, once you have recovered and any chemotherapy is finished. Some people wait longer. Waiting many years makes the operation harder, so ask early.
Why is there no fixed price on this page?
Because closing a loop stoma and reversing a Hartmann's are very different operations. You get the price in writing before admission.
