Incisional Hernia Repair at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a ₦35,000 consultation, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers surgeon and assistant fees, anaesthetist and theatre time, and standard consumables for the operation. Prices last checked 23 October 2026.
An incisional hernia is a bulge through the scar of an earlier operation on the tummy, such as a caesarean section, a fibroid operation, an appendix operation or a laparotomy. The muscle layer under the scar has not healed strongly, and fat or bowel pushes through. It does not close on its own and tends to grow. Repair closes the gap and usually reinforces it with a mesh, by open or keyhole surgery. Because these hernias range from a small gap to a very large one, the operation, and its price, are decided after the surgeon has examined you and, often, seen a scan.

How the price is set
Written quote after consultation
Consultant surgical opinion: ₦35,000
Your price is a written quote after the examination, because the size of the gap, how many there are, whether a mesh is needed, open or keyhole repair, and the length of stay all change it. It does not move without your written agreement.
What your written quote covers
- Surgeon and assistant fees
- Anaesthetist and theatre time
- Standard consumables for the operation
- Your bed for the expected stay
- Routine medication while you are admitted
- The post-operative review at six weeks
Not in the quote
- The first consultation and the tests that confirm you need the operation
- Treating conditions found during work-up, such as uncontrolled diabetes or an untreated infection
- Take-home medication after discharge
- Care for complications needing intensive care or a return to theatre
- A CT scan of the abdomen, where the surgeon needs one to measure the hernia
What decides your quote
- A larger gap, or more than one along the scar
- Open or keyhole repair, and the size of mesh needed
- A hernia that has been repaired before and come back
- A longer stay after a larger repair
- A trapped hernia needing emergency surgery
If an HMO is paying, the case needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.
Who this is for
- A bulge in the scar of a caesarean section or another tummy operation that is growing, aching or getting in the way
- A hernia in a scar that has become stuck before, even if it went back
- A hernia that makes the skin over it thin, sore or hard to keep clean
When it is not the right answer
- A hernia that has suddenly become painful, hard and will not go back, especially with vomiting, which needs an emergency department today
- A woman planning another pregnancy with a small painless hernia, which is often better repaired once her family is complete
- Someone whose weight, smoking or blood sugar is likely to make the repair fail, until these have been worked on, which the surgeon will discuss
- A small painless hernia in someone with serious heart or lung disease, where watching it can be safer than an operation
The pathway, step by step
- 1
Examination by a surgeon₦35,000
The scar is examined lying and standing. A CT scan is often added to measure the gap and find any others along the scar.
- 2
Getting ready
Bloods and an anaesthetic review. Stopping smoking and bringing blood sugar under control before the operation make the repair more likely to last.
- 3
Written price
The repair planned for your hernia, what it covers and what it costs, agreed in writing before anything is booked.
- 4
The operation
Under general anaesthetic, the bulge is pushed back, the gap is closed and a mesh is usually placed to strengthen it, through the old scar or by keyhole.
- 5
In hospital
Home the same day or after one to a few nights, depending on the size of the repair.
- 6
Review at six weeks₦25,000
Wound checked and the repair examined.
Recovery, realistically
Days 1 to 3
Soreness at the wound. Walking from the first day.
Week 1 to 2
Desk work after one to two weeks for a small repair, longer after a large one.
Week 2 to 6
No heavy lifting or straining while the repair heals. An abdominal binder may be advised.
After six weeks
Most activity, built up gradually. Keeping weight steady and not smoking help the repair last.
Risks you should be told about
- A collection of fluid under the wound, which usually settles on its own
- Wound infection
- The hernia coming back, more likely after a large hernia or a repair that has failed before
- Mesh infection, uncommon, which can mean the mesh has to be removed
- Injury to the bowel during the operation, rare
Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.
Questions people ask
Why did I get a hernia after my caesarean?
The muscle layer under the scar did not heal as strongly as the rest of the wall. Wound infection after the first operation, being overweight, smoking, diabetes and another pregnancy all make it more likely. It is not something you did wrong.
Will it go away on its own?
No. It stays the same or slowly grows. A small painless hernia can sometimes be watched if you know the warning signs, but most are repaired, and a planned repair is simpler and safer than an emergency one.
Do I need mesh?
Usually. Closing the gap with stitches alone comes back more often, so a mesh is used for most repairs. The surgeon tells you before the day what is planned for yours.
Can it be done by keyhole?
Sometimes. Keyhole repair can mean a shorter stay and fewer wound problems for suitable hernias, while a very large hernia or a scarred abdomen may be better repaired open. The surgeon advises which suits yours.
Why is there no fixed price on this page?
Because a small gap stitched as a day case and a large mesh repair with a stay of several nights are very different operations. You get a written price after the examination, before anything is booked.
