The short answer
Many people come to Kaduna for eye surgery from Zaria, Kafanchan, Katsina, Kano and Abuja. Plan for more than one visit: an assessment, the day of surgery, and a check soon after, with drops in between. Start with a video consultation so the first trip counts, bring a companion who can stay with you, and do not travel home until the surgeon has checked the eye.

Start with a video consultation
A video consultation lets the ophthalmologist hear your history, review any previous reports and tell you which tests and visits you will need. It saves a wasted journey, and it lets family members in other towns join the conversation before anyone travels.
How many trips to plan for
The exact plan depends on the operation, but for most eye surgery expect:
- An in-person assessment, where the eye is examined and measured
- The day of surgery, usually a day case
- A check the next day or within the first week
- Further checks over the following weeks
Staying in Kaduna
If you live far away, consider staying with family or nearby for the first days after surgery, so the first check does not mean a long road journey with a freshly operated eye. Dust on the road is hard on a healing eye; wear the shield or sunglasses, and keep the car windows up.
After retina surgery with a gas bubble you must not fly until the surgeon says the bubble has gone. Plan to travel home by road.
What to bring
- Every medicine you take, or photos of the packs
- Any previous eye reports, scans or glasses
- Your HMO card, if you have one
- A companion who can stay with you and help with drops
- Sunglasses and a clean cloth for wiping the face

Common questions
Can the follow-up be done near home?
Sometimes the later checks can be done by video or nearer home, but the surgeon usually wants to see the eye in person soon after surgery. Ask at the assessment which visits must be in Kaduna.
Can I take the train from Abuja?
Yes, the Abuja to Kaduna train is an option for the trips before and after surgery, as is the road. After retina surgery with gas you must avoid flying; check with your surgeon before any travel.
Can my HMO be used if I live in another state?
If you have an HMO, eligible plans can cover eye care on Mezo, and the Mezo desk files the prior authorisation with your HMO for you.
