Tongue-Tie Release (Frenotomy) at Mezo Health in Lagos, Nigeria is priced in a written quote after a consultation from ₦50,000, because the right operation and its cost depend on what the surgeon finds. The quote covers the procedure by a trained clinician, feeding support straight afterwards, and a review of feeding after the procedure. Prices last checked 3 November 2026.

A frenotomy divides the short, tight band of skin under a baby's tongue so the tongue can move freely. In a young baby it takes seconds, is done awake, and the baby can feed straight afterwards. It is offered only when tongue-tie is causing feeding problems that help with the latch has not fixed. An older child with a thick band may need a short operation under general anaesthetic instead.

How the price is set

Written quote after consultation

Consultant paediatric surgeon opinion: from ₦50,000

Your price is a written quote after the assessment, because a snip in a young baby and an operation under anaesthetic in an older child differ. It does not move without your written agreement.

What your written quote covers

  • The procedure by a trained clinician
  • Feeding support straight afterwards
  • A review of feeding after the procedure

Not in the quote

  • The first consultation
  • Ongoing breastfeeding support sessions
  • Speech therapy for an older child

What decides your quote

  • A young baby, done awake, or an older child, under general anaesthetic
  • A thick band that needs stitches

If an HMO is paying, the operation needs prior authorisation before admission. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk will start it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.

What happens

The pathway, step by step

  1. 1

    Assessment₦50,000

Feeding is watched and the tongue's movement checked, so the snip is done only when it will help.

  2. 2

    A written price

The procedure, in writing, before it is done.

  3. 3

    The procedure

In a young baby, the band is divided with sterile scissors in seconds, without anaesthetic. Any bleeding is a few drops.

  4. 4

    Feeding straight away

Your baby goes to the breast or bottle immediately, which comforts and settles any bleeding.

  5. 5

    Feeding review₦25,000

Feeding is checked again over the following weeks.

Afterwards

Recovery, realistically

Same day

Most babies cry briefly and then feed. Some feed better straight away, others over a few days.

First week

A white patch under the tongue is normal healing, not infection.

Weeks after

Continuing feeding support helps your baby and you get the most from the procedure.

Risks you should be told about

  • A little bleeding, which usually stops with feeding
  • Infection, which is rare
  • The band growing back and needing a second procedure, which is uncommon
  • Feeding not improving, if the tongue-tie was not the main cause

Every operation carries risk. A surgeon who lists none is not being straight with you. Yours will go through these with you before you consent.

Questions people ask

Does every tongue-tie need cutting?

No. Many babies with tongue-tie feed well and need nothing. A frenotomy is offered only when tongue-tie is causing feeding problems that help with the latch has not fixed.

Does it hurt my baby?

It is very quick. Most young babies cry for a moment and settle with a feed. It must be done by a trained clinician, with sterile instruments.

Should it be done at home or by a traditional practitioner?

No. Cutting under the tongue with unsterile instruments can cause heavy bleeding and infection. It should be done by a trained clinician in a clean setting.
