Chronic kidney disease care in Lagos: your GP, regular kidney tests and a nephrologist when needed

Mezo Health looks after chronic kidney disease with a named GP you choose. Your GP agrees how often your kidney tests are done, keeps your blood pressure and sugar controlled, checks your medicines are safe for your kidneys, and refers you to a nephrologist when the guideline says you need one. Mezo does not run dialysis.

How we write and reviewAbout our pricesReport an error

Who this is for

  • Adults told they have reduced kidney function or protein in the urine
  • People with diabetes or high blood pressure, whose kidneys need watching
  • Anyone whose kidney results have been flagged and never followed up

How often you are reviewed

  1. 1

How often depends on your stage

NICE advises agreeing how often your kidney function (eGFR) and urine protein (ACR) are checked with you, bearing in mind that chronic kidney disease does not get worse in many people.

  2. 2

Blood pressure and sugar at every review

Controlling both is the main way to protect the kidneys.

These are the guideline intervals, listed under sources below. Your GP may see you more often.

Tests, and when they are done

Tests for chronic kidney disease and their timing
TestWhen
Kidney function (creatinine and eGFR)On the schedule agreed for your stage.
Urine albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR)On the schedule agreed for your stage.
Blood pressureAt every review.

Your GP orders the tests on Mezo. You see the price and pay before you go, then choose a partner lab or, in Lagos, a home collection.

What your GP does

  • Agrees your testing schedule with you and keeps to it
  • Controls your blood pressure and, if you have diabetes, your sugar
  • Checks every medicine for kidney safety, including painkillers such as ibuprofen
  • Books your next review before the call ends

When a nephrologist (kidney specialist) is involved

  • A high five-year risk of kidney failure, as worked out from your results
  • A lot of protein in the urine, or protein with blood
  • A sustained, fast fall in kidney function
  • Blood pressure still above target despite four medicines
  • A suspected rare or inherited cause

These are NICE's referral criteria, simplified. Your GP explains which one applies to you.

Questions people ask

Do I need a kidney doctor for chronic kidney disease?

Not always. A GP looks after most people with early chronic kidney disease: regular tests, blood pressure and medicines. A nephrologist is brought in when the results meet the referral criteria NICE sets.

Will my kidney disease get worse?

Not necessarily. The NHS notes that most people with chronic kidney disease control it with medicine and regular check-ups. Your GP watches the trend in your results, not one number.

Is Your GP insurance?

No. Your GP is a monthly subscription, not insurance. Nothing is included: every consult, test and medicine is paid when you use it, at the member price, shown before you pay.
