How we write and reviewAbout our pricesReport an error

Who this is for

  • Adults already told they have high blood pressure (hypertension), on treatment or not
  • People whose readings are still high despite their medicines
  • Anyone who has stopped going for checks because the clinic queue takes the whole day
  • A parent in Nigeria whose children abroad want someone to keep an eye on it

How often you are reviewed

  1. 1

Monthly while treatment is being set

The World Health Organization suggests a review every month after a medicine is started or changed, until your blood pressure reaches target.

  2. 2

Every 3 to 6 months once controlled

Once your blood pressure is at target, the WHO suggests a review every 3 to 6 months.

  3. 3

A yearly review of your whole care

NICE advises an annual review to check your blood pressure, your medicines, any symptoms and your lifestyle.

These are the guideline intervals, listed under sources below. Your GP may see you more often.

Tests, and when they are done

Tests for high blood pressure and their timing
TestWhen
Kidney function and electrolytes, cholesterol, blood sugar (HbA1c or fasting) and a urine testWhen treatment starts, then as your GP advises. The WHO lists these as the tests to look for other conditions and causes when treatment begins.
ECG (heart tracing)When treatment starts, where it can be done without delaying treatment.
Blood pressure readingsAt every review. Home readings with an upper-arm monitor help when your GP asks for them.

Your GP orders the tests on Mezo. You see the price and pay before you go, then choose a partner lab or, in Lagos, a home collection. The diabetes and blood pressure panel covers the routine bloods and urine at home for ₦95,000, collection included.

What your GP does

  • Agrees your target with you: NICE advises a clinic reading below 140/90 for adults under 80, and below 150/90 from 80, with lower targets where your GP judges them right, for example with diabetes or kidney disease
  • Writes and adjusts your prescription
  • Orders your tests and goes through the results with you
  • Books your next review before the call ends

When a physician or cardiologist is involved

  • Blood pressure still above target on the best tolerated doses of four medicines (NICE)
  • A suspected underlying cause, such as a kidney or hormone problem
  • Signs of damage to the heart, kidneys or eyes

Mezo does not yet have a cardiologist taking bookings. When you need one, your GP tells you where to be seen and sends a summary of your care with you.

Go to the nearest emergency department now if

  • Chest pain or pressure that does not go away, or pain spreading to the arm, neck, jaw or back
  • A very high reading (180/120 or above) with confusion, chest pain, breathlessness or changes in your vision
  • Sudden weakness of the face, arm or leg, slurred speech or confusion

A video consult is not the place for an emergency.

Questions people ask

Which doctor treats high blood pressure?

A GP looks after most people with high blood pressure: setting the target, choosing and adjusting the medicines, and arranging the tests. A physician or cardiologist is brought in when blood pressure stays high on several medicines or a cause needs finding.

Can a doctor manage my blood pressure online?

Yes, most of it. Your GP reviews you by video, reads your home and clinic readings, orders your tests and writes your prescription on Mezo. You are seen in person when something needs examining.

How often should my blood pressure be checked?

While your medicines are being started or changed, about monthly until you reach target. Once controlled, every 3 to 6 months, with a fuller review once a year. Your GP books the next one at each visit.

Is Your GP insurance?

No. Your GP is a monthly subscription, not insurance. Nothing is included: every consult, test and medicine is paid when you use it, at the member price, shown before you pay.
