How we write and reviewAbout our pricesReport an error

Who this is for

  • Adults taking thyroid replacement for an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism)
  • People with an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism or Graves' disease)
  • Anyone with a goitre or thyroid nodule being watched
  • People whose thyroid tests are borderline and need repeating

How often you are reviewed

  1. 1

    Underactive thyroid

NICE suggests a TSH test every 3 months until the level is stable (two similar results in range, 3 months apart), then once a year.

  2. 2

    Overactive thyroid on antithyroid medicine

NICE suggests thyroid tests every 6 weeks until TSH is in range, then TSH every 3 months until the medicine is stopped.

  3. 3

    After treatment stops

Checks continue on a schedule, because thyroid conditions can return. Your doctor tells you how often.

These are the guideline intervals, listed under sources below. Your GP may see you more often.

What your GP does

  • Arranges your thyroid tests on time and goes through the results with you
  • Adjusts your thyroid replacement and writes your prescription
  • Explains what your results mean, and the signs of too much or too little treatment
  • Books your next review before the call ends

When an endocrinologist is involved

  • An overactive thyroid: NICE places its definitive treatment with a specialist
  • A goitre or nodule that needs a scan or an opinion on surgery
  • Pregnancy or planning a pregnancy, which changes which treatments are suitable
  • A child with a thyroid problem: a paediatric endocrinologist

Where surgery is the answer, thyroidectomy has its own page with the price.
