Trigger finger happens when the tendon that bends a finger or thumb catches in the tight tunnel it runs through at the base of the finger. The finger clicks or sticks bent, then snaps straight, and in time it can lock so that the other hand is needed to straighten it. It is commonest in the thumb, ring and middle fingers, in women, and in people with diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis or an underactive thyroid. It is a problem of the tendon, not arthritis of the joint, and it is not dangerous, but it can be painful and get in the way of work. Many cases settle with a splint or a steroid injection. A finger that keeps locking is freed with a short operation under local anaesthetic.

Symptoms
- A finger or thumb that clicks or catches when you bend or straighten it
- A finger that sticks bent, then snaps straight suddenly
- Stiffness and catching that are worst in the morning
- A tender lump in the palm at the base of the finger
- A finger locked bent that you have to straighten with the other hand
- Pain at the base of the finger or thumb when gripping
When to See a Doctor
See a doctor if a finger keeps catching or locking, or if it hurts to grip. See an orthopaedic or hand surgeon if the finger stays locked, if it has not settled after an injection, or if you have diabetes and several fingers are affected. See a doctor the same day for a red, hot, swollen finger that is painful to move, especially after a cut or a prick, because infection in a tendon sheath needs urgent treatment. A finger that will not straighten after an injury is a different problem and needs prompt examination.
Treatment options
- Rest from the gripping that sets it off
- A splint that holds the finger straight, often worn at night
- A steroid injection into the tendon sheath, which settles many trigger fingers
- Better control of blood sugar where diabetes is present
- Trigger finger release, a short day-case operation under local anaesthetic, for a finger that keeps locking
- Finger exercises after treatment to keep it moving

Common Questions
Will trigger finger go away by itself?
Some mild cases do, especially with rest and a splint. A finger that has been catching for months, or that locks, usually needs an injection or a small operation.
Is trigger finger caused by arthritis?
No. It is a problem of the tendon and its tunnel, not the joint. It is more common in people with diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis, so your doctor may check for these.
How long does recovery from trigger finger release take?
You move the finger from the first day. Light use returns within days, the stitches come out at about ten to fourteen days, and full grip usually returns over a few weeks.
Should I have the finger pulled or massaged?
No. Forcing a locked finger, or having it pulled by a bonesetter, can injure the tendon. A splint, an injection or a short operation are the treatments that work.
