A uric acid test costs ₦12,000 on Mezo, paid online and done at a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site. Uric acid is the substance that forms crystals in the joints in gout. NICE uses a level of 360 micromol/litre or more to support a diagnosis of gout, and the same figure as the target to get below on treatment. What the test is for
Uric acid builds up when the body makes too much or the kidneys clear too little. Beer, spirits, organ meat, sugary drinks, some water tablets and kidney disease all raise it.
A high level without symptoms is common and is not gout. Gout is diagnosed from the attacks, with the test to support it; NICE advises repeating a normal result at least two weeks after an attack has settled if gout is still suspected.
When a doctor asks for it
- A sudden, very painful, swollen joint, often the big toe, that settled in a week or two
- On a uric acid lowering medicine, to check the level is below target
- Kidney stones, or kidney disease

What is a normal uric acid level?
Laboratories print their own range on the report. For someone being treated for gout, NICE sets the target below 360 micromol/litre, which is also the level it uses to support the diagnosis.
My uric acid is high but I have no pain. Do I need treatment?
Usually not for the number alone. A doctor looks at why it is high, such as kidney function, alcohol and medicines, and treats gout when there are attacks.
Can I pay at the lab?

How do I get my result?
When the laboratory has checked and released your result, we send you a text message and you read it on Mezo, signed in to your account. If a doctor on Mezo asked for the test, they see it too. Mezo does not promise a result time on this page, because it depends on the test and the site.
