The short answer
There is no fixed upper age for LASIK, but after about 40 the question changes. From the mid-forties most people need reading glasses because the natural lens stiffens, and LASIK does not stop that. Later, an early cataract may be starting, and a lens replacement operation may be a better way to correct sight. Dry eye also becomes more common with age. A full assessment tells you which option makes sense.

Reading glasses come anyway
Presbyopia, the stiffening of the lens with age, affects nearly everyone from the mid-forties. LASIK fixes the distance prescription, but you will still reach for reading glasses. Some people choose monovision, one eye set for distance and one for near. It suits some people well and others not at all, so it is often tried with contact lenses first.
When lens surgery may be better
If you are in your fifties or older, or already have some lens clouding, replacing the natural lens with an artificial one can correct your prescription and prevent a cataract later. It is a bigger procedure than laser, but it deals with the lens that will cause problems sooner or later anyway.
Other checks that matter more with age
- Dry eye, which laser can worsen
- Early cataract
- Glaucoma, which should be checked before any eye surgery
- Macular or retinal disease, especially with diabetes

Common questions
I am 50. Can I still have LASIK?
Possibly, if your eyes are healthy. Your surgeon will compare it with lens surgery for your eyes.
Will LASIK stop me needing reading glasses?
Not usually, unless monovision is used. Presbyopia is a change in the lens, not the cornea.
Can I have cataract surgery later if I have had LASIK?
Yes. Tell the cataract surgeon about your laser surgery, and keep any old records, because it affects the lens calculation.
