Ophthalmology

Cataract is the largest single cause of avoidable blindness in Nigeria, and the operation that fixes it takes about twenty minutes and sends you home the same day. The gap between how treatable it is and how many people live blind with it is the clearest case of unmet need in the whole of surgery here.

What we treat

  • Cataract, including advanced cataract in both eyes
  • Glaucoma, screening and management
  • Pterygium
  • Diabetic eye disease
  • Refractive error, spectacles and contact lenses
  • Red, painful or watering eyes
  • Sudden loss of vision, which is always urgent
  • Children's eye problems and squint

How care works here

  1. 1

A full examination, not just a sight test

Vision, pressure, slit lamp and a dilated look at the back of the eye. Half the serious eye disease we find is in someone who came about their glasses.

  2. 2

    Biometry before any cataract operation

The eye is measured so the right lens power is ordered for you. Skipping this is why some people see worse after surgery than they expected.

  3. 3

Lens options explained in money terms

A standard monofocal lens is included in the quoted price. Anything above that is optional, priced separately, and you are told what it actually buys you.

  4. 4

Day case, one eye at a time

You come in, have the operation under local anaesthetic, and go home. The second eye is usually done a few weeks later.

  5. 5

Reviewed the next day and at six weeks

Both reviews are part of the price. Your final spectacle prescription is taken once the eye has settled.

Questions people ask

How long does cataract surgery take?

The operation itself is about twenty minutes. You are at the centre for roughly half a day in total and you go home the same day.

Will I still need glasses?

With a standard lens, usually yes for reading. You are told what to expect for your eye before you choose, rather than afterwards.

Is it worth operating if the cataract is very advanced?

Usually yes. A dense cataract is a harder operation and the surgeon should say so, but people who have been unable to see for years are exactly who this surgery is for.

Can I use my HMO?

Yes, on plans that cover eye surgery. Prior authorisation is needed and the desk files it. Premium lens upgrades are not usually covered and are quoted to you as cash.
