The short answer
Fibroid surgery can be done well in Nigeria, and the result depends more on the surgeon, the blood plan and the follow-up than on the country. A trip abroad adds costs a hospital quote does not show: visas for you and a companion, flights for two, nights before admission and after discharge, time off work for both of you, and care at home if a problem appears after you return. India's visa alone costs a Nigerian US$585 plus a US$3 charge per person at the Abuja High Commission. Compare a written, itemised quote from abroad with a written, all-in quote here, line by line.

Why women look abroad for fibroid surgery
The reasons are real: fear of heavy bleeding and blood transfusion, stories of operations that went wrong, wanting keyhole surgery, or a sister or friend who came back from India or Turkey happy. Those worries deserve straight answers, not a sales pitch. The fair test is to ask the same questions of any surgeon, in Lagos, Delhi or Istanbul, and compare the answers and the full cost.
What the hospital quote abroad does not show
When you add up a trip for fibroid surgery, include the parts that are easy to forget:
- Visas for you and at least one companion, the trips to the visa office, and any vaccination certificates you need
- Return flights for two
- Accommodation and feeding for the nights before admission and after discharge, until the surgeon says you are fit to fly
- Local transport, an interpreter if you need one, and phone data to keep in touch with home
- Scans and blood tests the hospital may repeat when you arrive, which may not be in the package, so ask
- Blood transfusion, extra nights or a second operation if something does not go to plan, and who pays for them
- Time off work for you and for your companion, and childcare at home
- Follow-up after you return, and treatment in Nigeria if a complication appears weeks later
- Exchange rate movement between the day you are quoted and the day you pay
The visa, in real figures
India: the High Commission of India in Abuja lists one visa fee for Nigerian nationals for every visa category, US$585 plus a US$3 community welfare charge, or ₦819,200 in cash, on its fee schedule dated 1 July 2026. Your companion pays the same. India's online e-visa fee table, checked on 23 October 2026, does not list Nigeria. India also requires travellers arriving from yellow fever countries to carry a yellow fever vaccination card, or they may be quarantined for up to six days.
Turkey: the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Nigerians holding ordinary passports need a visa to enter Türkiye. Check the current fee and process with the Turkish mission before you pay any hospital deposit.
Fees and rules change. Confirm them on the official site on the day you apply, not from an agent's flyer.
Hospital price pages abroad: read them carefully
Many hospital websites abroad publish wide price ranges for local patients, without a date and without saying what is included. One large Indian hospital group's own myomectomy page, checked on 23 October 2026, gave several national ranges that did not agree with each other. A range on a website is not a quote. We do not print a foreign total on this page because we could not find a current, itemised hospital price that we could check.
Ask any hospital, here or abroad, for a written quote that names the operation, open or keyhole, the expected nights, the blood held and given, histology, and what happens to the bill if more is needed.
Flying home after fibroid surgery
Having an operation and taking a journey of more than four hours both raise the chance of a blood clot in the leg (deep vein thrombosis), which can travel to the lungs. A flight home from India or Turkey puts the two together. The NHS advises people treated abroad to stay in that country long enough to recover before travelling home, so ask the surgeon how long you must stay, budget for those nights, and ask about blood-thinning injections and stockings for the flight.
Heavy periods from fibroids can cause iron deficiency anaemia. Anaemia should be treated before any operation, and travelling while very anaemic is tiring and less safe. Our guide on blood transfusion and fibroid surgery explains how blood is planned.
Complications do not wait until you are home
Fever, a wound that becomes hot and swollen, bleeding, or a painful swollen calf can appear days or weeks after a myomectomy. When the operation was done abroad, the surgeon who knows your case is a video call away, and the doctor you see in Lagos has no operation note. Before you fly home, insist on:
- A full operation note: open or keyhole, how many fibroids were removed, their size and position, and whether the womb lining was opened
- The histology report on the fibroids, or a clear plan for how it will reach you
- A discharge letter listing your medicines and when each one stops
- The name and direct contact of the doctor who will answer questions after you leave
Questions to ask any fibroid surgeon, here or abroad
- How many myomectomies do you do in a typical year?
- Open or keyhole for my fibroids, and why?
- How much blood do you hold for me, and what is the plan if I bleed more?
- In what situation would you remove the womb, and will you ask me first?
- What does the quote include and exclude?
- Who sees me if something goes wrong at week two or week six?
How it works on Mezo
Myomectomy on Mezo is from ₦1,000,000. The all-in rate includes the surgeon, anaesthetist and theatre, two units of blood cross-matched and held, the expected three to four nights, histology on the fibroids removed, and the review at six weeks. A gynaecologist examines you and reviews your scan first, then you get a written all-in quote to compare line by line with any quote from abroad. Payment is online, so a daughter or son abroad can pay, and your follow-up is in the same city as your home.

Common questions
How much is fibroid surgery in India?
It varies by city, hospital, method and room, and hospital websites often give wide, undated ranges. We do not print a figure because we could not find a current, itemised price we could check. Get a written, itemised quote, then add the visa, flights, stay and companion costs on this page.
Is fibroid surgery in Turkey cheaper than in Nigeria?
We cannot say honestly, because we could not find a current, checkable hospital price in Turkey. What is certain is that Nigerians need a visa for Türkiye, and you will pay for flights and accommodation for two and time away from work. Compare the full cost of each option, not the hospital bill alone.
How soon can I fly home after a myomectomy abroad?
Your surgeon decides, based on how you are recovering and your clot risk. Do not book the return flight until the surgeon has told you when, and ask about clot prevention for the journey.
I had fibroid surgery abroad and now have a problem. What do I do?
Fever, a hot or leaking wound, heavy bleeding, chest pain or a painful swollen calf need an emergency department the same day. For anything less urgent, book a gynaecologist here and bring every document from abroad, especially the operation note and histology.
What does fibroid surgery cost in Nigeria on Mezo?
Myomectomy is from ₦1,000,000 and hysterectomy is from ₦1,600,000. A written all-in quote follows the gynaecologist's assessment, and you pay online.
