Malaria parasite test (MP)Often asked for with an FBC when you have a fever. On the price list as: Malaria Parasite (MP)₦9,000Book

The whole price of the test: the sample taken at the site and the written result. Paid online before you go, the same at every BeaconHealth Diagnostics site.

What the test is for

Red cells and haemoglobin carry oxygen, so low levels point to anaemia, which can make you tired, pale or breathless. White cells fight infection, and a count that is too high or too low helps a doctor decide what is going on. Platelets help blood to clot.

The PCV (packed cell volume) that many Nigerian doctors ask for is one of the figures in a full blood count. An FBC does not look for malaria parasites: that is a separate test.

When a doctor asks for it

  • Tiredness, paleness or breathlessness, to look for anaemia
  • Heavy periods, or bleeding from anywhere that will not settle
  • A fever, where the doctor wants to see the white cell count
  • In pregnancy, at the first antenatal visit
  • Before planned surgery, and to monitor some long-term medicines

How to prepare

  • No fasting for a full blood count on its own.
  • If it is booked with a fasting blood sugar or a lipid profile, fast as those tests need: 8 to 12 hours, water only.

Where you can do it

How much is a full blood count in Nigeria?

₦13,000 on Mezo, the same at every BeaconHealth Diagnostics site, paid online before you go.

Does a full blood count test for malaria?

No. An FBC can show changes that go with an infection, but it does not look for malaria parasites. For malaria you need a malaria test, which is ₦9,000 on Mezo.

Do I need to fast before an FBC?

No. Fast only if the same visit includes a fasting blood sugar or a lipid profile.

Can I pay at the lab?

No. You tick the test on Mezo, choose a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site that does it and pay online before you go. The price you pay is the price on this page, and the site has your order waiting when you arrive.

How do I get my result?

When the laboratory has checked and released your result, we send you a text message and you read it on Mezo, signed in to your account. If a doctor on Mezo asked for the test, they see it too. Mezo does not promise a result time on this page, because it depends on the test and the site.
