What it is for
A pelvic scan is how most fibroids and ovarian cysts are found and measured, and it helps a doctor look for the cause of heavy or painful periods, pelvic pain or difficulty getting pregnant. It shows the size and shape of the womb and the ovaries, and anything growing on them.
A scan shows what is there; it does not on its own decide what to do about it. A fibroid or cyst seen on a scan often needs nothing more than watching, so take the report to a doctor, by video if that is easier, before deciding on any treatment.
For an internal (transvaginal) scan you can ask for a chaperone, and you can ask the person doing the scan to stop at any time.
When a doctor asks for it
- Heavy, painful or irregular periods
- Pain in the lower tummy or pelvis
- A lump or swelling felt in the lower tummy
- Trying for a baby without success, to check the womb and ovaries
- Following up a fibroid or ovarian cyst seen on an earlier scan
How to prepare
- Call the site before you go and ask how to prepare. For many pelvic scans you are asked to drink water beforehand and not empty your bladder, so the womb shows clearly.
- Wear clothes that let you uncover your lower tummy easily.
Go to the nearest emergency department now, not a lab, for
- Severe pain in the lower tummy with a positive pregnancy test, pain in the tip of the shoulder, or fainting: this can be an ectopic pregnancy.
Where you can do it
At BeaconHealth Diagnostics sites in 19 cities, at the same price in each. Not every site has every machine, so when you book you are offered only the sites that do this test.
Done at the site, not at home

Pelvic scan (ultrasound): questions people ask
How much is a pelvic scan in Lagos?
₦20,000 on Mezo, the same at every BeaconHealth Diagnostics site in Lagos and in every other city on the network. A transvaginal scan is ₦25,000. You pay online before you go.
Is a pelvic scan safe?
Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves, not radiation. If you are, or might be, pregnant, tell the site: a pregnancy is checked with a pregnancy scan, which is ₦18,000 on Mezo.
Will the scan show whether I can get pregnant?
It shows the womb and ovaries, which is one part of the picture. Whether you ovulate is checked with a blood test, and the man's semen analysis (₦21,000) matters just as much. A doctor puts the results together.
Can I pay at the lab?
No. You tick the test on Mezo, choose a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site that does it and pay online before you go. The price you pay is the price on this page, and the site has your order waiting when you arrive.
How do I get my result?
When the laboratory has checked and released your result, we send you a text message and you read it on Mezo, signed in to your account. If a doctor on Mezo asked for the test, they see it too. Mezo does not promise a result time on this page, because it depends on the test and the site.
