How many physiotherapy sessions will I need?
The short answer
Most back, neck and joint problems improve over four to eight sessions spread across a few weeks, with exercises done at home in between. Recovery after a joint replacement usually needs six or more, and rehabilitation after a stroke runs for months. The single biggest reason physiotherapy fails is stopping after one or two visits.

Why one session is rarely enough
The first session is mostly assessment: finding out what is wrong, what is driving it, and setting goals. Treatment and exercise start the same day, but the body changes over weeks, not hours. Muscles strengthen, stiff joints loosen and movement patterns change only with repetition. That is why physiotherapy is planned as a course.
Typical courses
Every person is different, and your physiotherapist will give you an honest estimate at the first visit. As a rough guide:
- Recent back or neck pain: three to six sessions
- Back pain or sciatica that has lasted months: six to ten sessions
- Frozen shoulder, tennis elbow or heel pain: six or more, often over two to three months
- Ankle sprain or sports injury: three to six sessions
- After a knee or hip replacement: six or more over the first six weeks
- After a stroke: regular sessions over months, with the family continuing daily practice
How often
Once or twice a week is typical for most problems, more often early after surgery or a stroke. What happens between sessions matters as much as the sessions themselves: ten minutes of the right exercises every day is where most of the progress is made.
How to tell it is working
Pain should ease and movement should improve over two to three weeks, even if it is not gone. Your physiotherapist should be measuring something each visit: how far the joint bends, how far you can walk, how long you can sit. If nothing has changed after four to six sessions, the plan should change, or you may need a doctor or a scan.

Common questions
Is the block of six sessions worth it?
For most problems, yes. It is ₦240,000 for six sessions with the same physiotherapist, with no call-out fee, against ₦45,000 for a single session. Seeing the same person each time also means nobody starts again from scratch.
Can I stop when the pain goes?
Talk to your physiotherapist first. Pain often settles before strength and movement are back, and stopping early is the commonest reason the problem returns.
What if I cannot travel to a clinic every week?
That is exactly why we come to you. A course is much easier to finish when nobody has to sit in Lagos traffic with a painful back.
