What a knee replacement price covers
The surgeon and assistant, the anaesthetist and theatre time, a standard implant, your ward bed for the expected stay, routine medicines on the ward, physiotherapy in hospital from the first day, a check X-ray and a review at six weeks. Most people leave hospital one to four days after the operation and go back to work at around six to twelve weeks, depending on the job.
What a knee arthroscopy price covers
The surgeon and anaesthetist, theatre time and day-case recovery, medicines to take home and the first review. Most people go home the same day. Arthroscopy helps a knee that locks or catches from a torn meniscus or a loose piece of cartilage; it is not a treatment for knee arthritis on its own.
What an ACL reconstruction price covers
The surgeon and anaesthetist, theatre time, and taking and fixing the graft that replaces the torn ligament, with the first review. Recovery takes several months of physiotherapy, and the rehabilitation programme is the main thing that decides the result.
What changes the price
- Both knees done in one admission, which is priced separately
- An implant above the standard specification, if you and your surgeon choose one
- A meniscus repaired with implants rather than trimmed, or a meniscus repair alongside an ACL reconstruction
- A donor or synthetic graft instead of your own tendon
- Unexpected findings in theatre, such as severe deformity or old plates and screws
- A stay in intensive care, or a return to theatre for a complication
What is paid separately
The first consultation and the X-ray or MRI that confirm you need surgery, treatment of problems found before surgery such as uncontrolled diabetes, a brace if one is prescribed, and physiotherapy once you are home. Physiotherapy at home in Lagos can be booked on Mezo.
Paying through an HMO
If an HMO is paying, the operation needs prior authorisation before you are admitted. Bring your HMO number to the first consultation and the desk starts it. If the plan declines, you are told the cash price before anything is booked.
