The short answer
A child with sickle cell disease (SS or SC) does best with regular, planned care rather than only treatment during crises. A paediatric haematologist sets up preventive medicines and vaccinations, checks growth and the organs at the right ages, discusses hydroxyurea, and gives the family a written plan for pain, fever and the danger signs. Fever, chest pain, breathlessness, weakness on one side or a swelling tummy in a child with sickle cell is an emergency.
