What the test is for
Your genotype tells you which type of haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen, you inherited from each parent. AA is the usual type. AS means you carry the sickle cell trait: you do not have sickle cell disease and cannot develop it, but you can pass the gene on to a child. SS is sickle cell disease. Other results, such as AC or SC, are explained by the doctor who reads your report.
A child gets one gene from each parent. When both parents are AS, each pregnancy has a 1 in 4 chance of a child with sickle cell disease (SS), a 1 in 2 chance of a child who carries the trait (AS) and a 1 in 4 chance of a child who is AA. That is why many Nigerian couples check their genotypes before marriage or before trying for a baby.
A genotype result is information for planning, not a judgement on anybody. People who carry the trait live ordinary lives, and people with sickle cell disease live full lives with good care. If both partners carry a sickle gene, a doctor can explain what it means for your children and the choices open to you, so that whatever you decide, you decide it knowing the facts.
When a doctor asks for it
- Before marriage, or before you start trying for a baby, ideally for both partners
- Early in pregnancy, if you do not already know your genotype and blood group
- When you have never been tested, or cannot find a trustworthy written result
- When a doctor is looking for the cause of anaemia, jaundice or painful swelling of the hands and feet in a child
- Before planned surgery, where knowing your genotype changes how the team prepares
How to prepare
- No fasting. Eat and drink as normal.
- If you have had a blood transfusion in the last few months, tell the doctor and the laboratory before the test. Donated blood in your circulation can make a genotype result unreliable for a while.

Genotype and blood group test: questions people ask
How much is a genotype test in Nigeria?
On Mezo the genotype and blood group test together is ₦15,000, and the genotype alone is ₦9,600. The price is the same at every BeaconHealth Diagnostics site, and you pay it online before you go.
Can two people who are both AS get married?
That is the couple's own decision. What the test gives you is the information: when both partners are AS, each pregnancy has a 1 in 4 chance of a child with sickle cell disease. A doctor can talk you through what that means, so the choice you make is an informed one.
Can a genotype result be wrong?
It can happen, for example after a recent blood transfusion. If two results disagree, or a big decision rests on one old result, ask a doctor whether to repeat it. This test is done by haemoglobin electrophoresis, the method named on the price list.
Does my child need a genotype test?
If your child has never had one, it is worth knowing. A child with painful swollen hands or feet, repeated jaundice or anaemia should be seen by a doctor, not only tested.
Can I pay at the lab?
No. You tick the test on Mezo, choose a BeaconHealth Diagnostics site that does it and pay online before you go. The price you pay is the price on this page, and the site has your order waiting when you arrive.
How do I get my result?
When the laboratory has checked and released your result, we send you a text message and you read it on Mezo, signed in to your account. If a doctor on Mezo asked for the test, they see it too. Mezo does not promise a result time on this page, because it depends on the test and the site.
